It is not a vBulletin file. You should be able to safely delete it.

That's interesting...I recently installed vBulletin myself and also have a file (in my case called vb4xxu8N and 0 bytes) in my forum's root. I thought it was some sort of license file or something. Interesting that they both start with "vb."

I now have a second file of this same type in my forums root directory - it is called vbg4DvIa and is also 0 bytes like the other one. Any ideas?

Are you using imagemagick instead of GD?

After looking through the entire code I can't see anything that creates just vb <random> files other than Imagemagick.

Do you keep apache server logs for accesses? Might help track it down if we can match the modified time of the file against a HTTP request.

I do have access logs and will give them a look-see. Since you say that vBulletin itself is not the culprit, though, I'm wondering if vBadvanced CMPS might be doing it? I might ask around over there. Thanks!

I get those files every now and again but I do use ImageMagick. Is that the cause? I always thought it was a tempory file or something from FTP or vB.

Interesting. I definitely am not using ImageMagick...never even toggled it on. I do not think they are FTP temp files as I've never seen them before installing vBulletin. The fact that they appear in my forum's root and are prefixed with "vb" seems to suggest that they have something to do with vBulletin or perhaps a plug-in/add-on like vBadvanced (which I also use). The first file appeared the day after installing vBulletin and the second file appeared about four days after that. Cannot seem to trace it to anything. It is not a big deal as long as they don't multiply like rabbits and stay 0 bytes but I'd still like to figure out where they come from. Do any of the other folks who've seen these files also run vBadvanced CMPS?

Its a temporary file from vB when coverting thumbnails, though if it fails we don't clean up the file. I've put a fix into that for 3.5.5 / 3.6.0.

Kennn, if you have shell you can use a stat to find when the file was created / modified and then look through the apache access logs and see what script was accessed about a minute before and after. It would be a great help, I personally dont see them but I dont have an active forum.

Scott....sorry, no shell access here unfortunately.

I've just spotted a third file of the same type. Are you saying that these files are created by vBulletin? Your previous post seemed pretty definite that they were not.

A failed thumbnail conversion causes them? I'm not sure what a "thumbnail conversion" is (are you talking about during an Impex conversion?) but there were never any thumbnails in any of the posts on my forum to convert, so methinks it might be something else, unless I'm totally misunderstanding.
