Users Complaining "Can't Stay Logged In, Can't Post Messages"

    Someone please help!

I recently purchased vBulletin 2.2.7 and am loving it, however, I am getting far too many E-mails from users who are unable to post messages because they can't stay logged in.

They keep trying to log in but, almost immediately, they are logged out — and never able to post messages.

I am further led to believe there is a problem because I see, several times daily, at the top of my forums, "Welcome to our newest member, _______," but there are RARELY EVER any new messages from these newest members.

I have so many forum members with zero posts.

    Someone please help!

    Thank you.

    1. Do they have cookies and the "stay logged in" option enabled in their user CP?
    2. If so, ask them to delete their cookies

What settings do you have for Cookie Domain and Path the save Cookies in your Admin CP?

filburt1, yes, they have "stay logged in" enabled. What will having them delete their cookies do? Do I have to ask all my users who have these troubles to do this?

Steve, the cookie domain is blank as is the path to save cookies. Could this be my problem?

        Any further suggestions?

        Thanks.

Deleting cookies tends to delete corrupted ones as well, but if virtually all of the members have this problem, then Steve's advice would probably be better.

Try placing a slash ('/') in the 'path the save cookies' field.

I see. You had previously said this was empty which is why I recommended this.

Do you run any other scripts anywhere on your site that sets cookies? Are the people having this problem running firewalls or other software that may be blocking cookies?

My forums are run on a separate server, so no other cookies except vBulletin cookies are set. The problem doesn't seem to be related to firewalls — users with low security are having trouble staying logged in, and thus posting messages.

What browsers and ISPs are these members using? I can't think of any reason why a significant number of random people would have this problem.

I would ask them to manually delete their cookies. To do this in IE 6.0:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings -> View Files

Then search for the individual cookies for your domain and delete them all. The name should be in the form of:

                      Cookie:[email protected]
                      and
                      Cookie:username@www.yoursite.com

...and any derivatives of the above. Then highlight the individual cookies and delete each one found. After this, close all browser windows and restart IE.

I've been getting emails about this same issue every day about people who can't login or stay logged in. They try to login but get kicked back to the login screen again. I'm running 2.2.7.

Mabey this is a issue in the changes to the way cookies where handled in 2.2.7? (if i remember correctly some bug fixes changed the way cookies where set)
