Comments on Host experiences and testimonials thread

I also host a site with KDAWebservices and have done for over 6 months. The service has been out of this world. It's all friendly and servers are extremly fast.

Just a quick note, anyone who tried the server load graphs for us, that were linked to above - I'll take the honours for breaking them (and fixing them), I forgot to add PNG support in to PHP when I recompiled it yesterday.

Another quick mention about the IDE hard disks, we use IBM 7200rpm hard disks, the fastest IDE drives that money can buy, with about 36Mb/s data transfer I don't think they'll be getting stressed any time soon.

help! I'm not sure I can sort out all this hosting info

I'm still confused because I don't know what various features such as "good GZIP performance" mean. No, I'm not a complete computer newbie - I've been in the Web development field for about four years, and I've been coding in ASP, Cold Fusion, Javascript, and DHTML for a few years now. It's just that I'm new to the worlds of PHP and Perl (used in the free Ikonboard software).

All I know is that I need to find a good host with PHP 4. I've checked with the two ISPs that host various sites of mine, and they both have only PHP 3. So that's why I'm searching for a new ISP for some vBulletin forums I'll be installing and configuring shortly.

I also know that I need to "run PHP as an Apache module" (in accordance with the vBulletin manual instructions) and to find a Web server and PHP system that enables the permission (for the administrator) to write files to disk - for example, when uploading a set of avatars for users to choose from (in addition to just being able to upload their own custom avatars).

I'm really not sure what my bandwidth requirements would be. I'm planning on establishing some fan forums for some British bands and I'm just basing my estimate on one large fan forum with 5,000 registered users (but never more than 250 or so users online at the same time). Because that forum enabled image attachments and off-topic posting, bandwidth considerations became a major issue and the forum has been shut down for at least a few months.

I don't think my site would get as big as that, though I suppose it's possible since I'm hoping to create a forum in which at least 3 or 4 bands have distinct subforums (rather than just one band having an entire vBulletin forum to itself). So, any general guidelines regarding bandwidth and space to make available for such a forum?

With 200/250 user at the same time, I think that you'll need a dedicated server.

            wow, Downtime?

downtime is HUGE for a site like mine - I absolutely cannot tolerate it.

Are you saying this host has a downtime problem, or that you just don't know?

They tend to be down for like half a minute a few times a day, usually right in the middle of a new script

PRSop2000, you ought to take the whole 2 minutes and write your own review, rather than copy mine word-for-word. Sheesh.

Sorry bout that. I was in a hurry and your words fit the description as well as it could be put. I can rewrite it if it's REALLY a problem.

No... in light of what's going on in the US, and the world right now, it's not important at all.

                      Peace out.
