In North America, December 26 is called Boxing Day and most stores have great deals on merchandise. Its a one day sale and people line up for hours to try to ca$h in on the savings. Besides North America, where else does this event occur?

Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Britain is what a quick web search reveals. While Dec 25th is a busy shopping day in the U.S., we don't have this day as a Holiday nor do I see anyone refer to it as "Boxing Day".

we have it in Éire too, the lasting effects of British Rule I suppose, but people call it St. Stephens day too.

Some people were waiting 6 hours to get sstuff on sale!!! I just bought online to get the same deals!!!
Yeah, right now I am in Buffalo, New York, about 15 minutes from the Canadian Border and the stores are totally packed because of Boxing Day Sales.
Yep, Boxing Day it is.Many sales!
Sales must be intense if the day is called Boxing Day![]()
still alot of shops arnt open though we usually have January sales which continue on from boxing day
This is more of a Canadian thing. Never celebrated Boxing Day in the United States, though I suspect some people who come from strong Loyalist backgrounds would continue to celebrate one of the British Empire's holidays even after this many years because of family tradition.Originally Posted by 0ptima
We do have big sales after Christmas in the United States but it isn't any kind of official holiday.
I believe it is a reference to the Lords giving gifts to the peasants who served in their household during the year. Since the peasants had to work on Christmas, they got their boxes full of gifts and hand-me-downs on December 26th.Originally Posted by cirisme

Freddie, where are you from?!?! On Dec 25th where I live, you can't hardly find a gas station open, let alone it be a busy shopping day. Did you mean the 26th?Originally Posted by Freddie
