How does 'You last visited:' work?

When you veiw a forums' home page and see the 'You last visited' message, where is that date stored?
Is it in the db or locally in cookies?
When I login to my forums it looks as I expect it to but when I'm browsing as a guest I still see it and it is way out of date.

    *edit*
I really need that spell checker.
Do we have to wait for vB4?

The last visited date is in the database.

If it's in the db then how does it work when a guest views the board?

I don't know. Perhaps a Developer can answer this.
