I'm having an issue with the search function as well. When my users search for something, no matter how they search, it returns the thread title instead of the post. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing? For example: if I have a Food forum and someone searches for "toast" it returns the thread title and not the post even if "posts" is selected in the search options.
Frustrations with the irrelevance of search results on my forum.

Yup...have that happen on mine too Grimace. Hope they get it squared away in 4.02Vote for these items in the tracker: Image Watermarking ----- Search Algorithm Sucks ----- Drop Main CSS section from style manager ------ Simplify process to accept pending group join requests ------ Add option to publish to the wall of a "Fan Page" in addition to the user's personal FB wall. ------ CMS Should physically resize images into thumbnails and not scale via CSSComment

This is still really bad in .02
I'm trying to compile a list of search phrases/terms and threads that SHOULD be in the results but aren't so I can post it here or show it to the devs or something. I'd just like to know one way or another whether this is a design flaw or something I've simply got turned off somewhere.Vote for these items in the tracker: Image Watermarking ----- Search Algorithm Sucks ----- Drop Main CSS section from style manager ------ Simplify process to accept pending group join requests ------ Add option to publish to the wall of a "Fan Page" in addition to the user's personal FB wall. ------ CMS Should physically resize images into thumbnails and not scale via CSSComment

When you rebuilt your search index, do you know if it finished and didn't stall anywhere? Have you looked at your database to see how many rows are in the searchcore and searchcore_text table?

Lynne, everytime I've rebuilt the search index its ran until the end when it reverted back to the maintenance screen.
I've not looked at the database itself. Could you clarify a bit more what I need to look for if I do that?Vote for these items in the tracker: Image Watermarking ----- Search Algorithm Sucks ----- Drop Main CSS section from style manager ------ Simplify process to accept pending group join requests ------ Add option to publish to the wall of a "Fan Page" in addition to the user's personal FB wall. ------ CMS Should physically resize images into thumbnails and not scale via CSSComment

For me part of the problem is the search result always comes back with the threads that had the latest posts first, regardless of the Search Relevance Thread Title Score is set to 30 and Search Relevance Date Score set to 0, the results, even though you have named the actual name of the thread, won't come up until you scroll down to the thread based on the actual last post date. If it hasn't been touched for a few years (which is why you'd do a search a lot of the time anyway), it won't even appear in the first page!
This is using the generic search window with the magnifying glass on the navbar.Comment

Perhaps thats the same issue I'm experimenting, because thats the same behaivor. Users are searching for thread titles that they know are out there, and they arent even showing up. And I've experimented with some operators such as the +, -, and "" but they don't seem to help any.Vote for these items in the tracker: Image Watermarking ----- Search Algorithm Sucks ----- Drop Main CSS section from style manager ------ Simplify process to accept pending group join requests ------ Add option to publish to the wall of a "Fan Page" in addition to the user's personal FB wall. ------ CMS Should physically resize images into thumbnails and not scale via CSSComment

What I find is that the post/thread title doesn't seem to be weighted heavily enough i.e. if you search for "plumber" it seems more likely to return a post that may have the word plumber in it somewhere above a thread that is called "any one know any good plumbers?"Comment

Bumping this again. Here is an example from my forum. search term "atc110" http://www.3wheelerworld.com/search.php?searchid=780427
First 10 results include the following (in order):
83/84 atc125m exhaust options.
Price when new
ATC 70, how about those giovanni motors?
The Knarly 90, now it rolls!
We need a page for discontinued parts.
Name, Age, Sex, Location, Ocupations, Family, Machines
110 parts needed
i started with one, now I have three.
Are these pull starters the same?

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
I ran the search from Advanced Search > Search Multiple Content Type > Search Types: Posts > Keyword:att110 and got the same results you did. However, when I ran it from Search Single Content Type, I got totally different results... which I find to be weird. I am pretty sure there is a bug in the bug tracker regarding the search results. You should add your input to that.

Lynne, when I did mine, I did it from just the normal search bar at the top, no advanced configurations. I've even got articles written with atc110 related content, and none of it is showing up either.
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/proje...?issueid=34936 Is the only one I could find. Its been confirmed since 4.0, which isn't really assuring. I added to it again. I would appreciate very much if you and anyone else that is encountering similar issues would reply to it with some additional information.Vote for these items in the tracker: Image Watermarking ----- Search Algorithm Sucks ----- Drop Main CSS section from style manager ------ Simplify process to accept pending group join requests ------ Add option to publish to the wall of a "Fan Page" in addition to the user's personal FB wall. ------ CMS Should physically resize images into thumbnails and not scale via CSSComment

I couldn't do a search off the normal search bar since I wasn't a registered user (I need to enter recaptcha stuff).
I was on the beta team and I do believe the devs heard a lot about the search from all of us and have continued to hear about it lately. However, I don't have any idea of exactly what is being done about it.

MySQL Fulltext boolean should work
I just spent some time looking at search.php and I am now thoroughly confused. The code seems to be there to perform fulltext boolean searches. However, they do not seem to happen on my vBulletin board.
In particular there does not appear to be support for boolean phrase with " characters.
I can imagine that someone may have thought they could come up with a better syntax for end users than the MySQL boolean operators, but whatever the syntax is, I cannot find it documented anywhere.
We are running 3.8.4 by the way. I have been waiting for 4 to settle down a bit before upgrading.
I am afraid I do not really understand why this is so hard. The core match function seems pretty simple to me. My end users would probably be happy if they could compose the boolean string and just bypass whatever vBulletin is trying to do with the search function (besides making the result set readable).Comment
