vBulletin 3.8.0 Release Discussion

If anybody is concerned about privacy and revenues and data mining, then they shouldn't have an Adsense account in the first place. Google has had a sordid history with privacy and dealing with communist China in regards to censoring so don't deal with them if you don't trust them. Me, I don't have anything to hide so I'll take my adsense revenue generated by my board.

It's not Google that's being questioned here, it's IB. Everyone knows Google's practices. But there is no full disclosure about what data IB is mining (if any) with this "beneficial" addon. I agree with those who have voiced concerns about this before me - the sooner IB comes completely clean on every little detail of this AdSense integration, the better.

I'm certainly NOT going to install it until there is 100% disclosure about every detail of this new feature.

Well, I for one just don't get it. We have to associate an account then download special files? Why again can't we just enter a publishers ID? Why does it even matter when 80% of people are going to have an Adsense account anyway so there is no affiliate benefit for IB?

I have 91 (!) templates that need to be updated after the upgrade to 3.8.0 (from 3.7.3). You must be joking.

For the question why this was added only in gold and not during beta... It was added only then because we had to go through some approval process with Google. There was actually some scare on the day before, during our regular teleconference, that we might have to push back the release by a day or two if Google people did not get back to us on the day before the release. Thankfully, everything worked out great, and we were able to include this on the intended release day

So that's at least 7 days ago you decided to install this feature.

Don't get me wrong, but you guys should really have been upfront about this. As in months ago up front.

You must do A LOT of template hacking... I only had 9 to update.

Make sure you make user of the ad template locations. They are great for customizing stuff without the need to rehack every time there is an update.
But that may not help you much. that's a ton.

So can you pass on this question to management please:

Why did you not just add a field in the vBulletin AdminCP to enter your own Adsense Publisher ID, and use that for the basis for generating ad code? There is NO reason for this information to be sent to vbulletin.com. If you are only interested in referal credits for new Adsense users, as you say, why do you need to know EXISTING Adsense user's information?

Actually, you do not have to do anything, it is your choice.

Can you please respond the following question.

Why did you choose to integrate adsense with member accounts , instead of using vBulletin Options. We all know this can be done very easily with vBulletin Options.

I honestly want to know the technical side of this decision.

Thats not the way to respond to your customers whom are worried about their privacy. This is something that can seriously destroy a company reputation. I honestly want to receive information so all my worries are cleared. Instead of this i would Jelsoft post information that will solve all the questions in minds.

So , it looks like Google cleaned all questions. If you associate your adsense account with vBulletin , IB can check your stats...

I was agreeing with the post that pointed out that it is opt-in to use adsense with vBulletin in that manner. As Mike pointed out the info in the template containing the adsense code is a mandatory part of what google expects when it is implemented in this way.

There are many existing customers who already have adsense up and running and will not use this and there are many others who won't include it in the download, was my point.

as stated by Google, the API is used to have a control on what your clients are doing... *(my way to say it)... you did not have to use the API a single bit... having a single field in the adminCP Options would suffice, and you know it.

state the clear goals of IB/Jelsoft, and the question will be answered and you can fill some other reclaims... for now, you refuse to be clear, you just give known facts to your advantage.
