Thread: Poss. Simple Question

    Poss. Simple Question

I'm going to add a forum to my board and what I want to do is then add subforums to it and then I'm going to post a thread in those subforums.

    So I have

    Forum A > Subforum A > Thread A

I want to allow posts in Thread A, but I don't want to allow any more Threads to be made in Subforum A ONLY, is that possible?

Yes you can do that. Edit the group permissions for that subforum:

Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Permissions

You will notice that each group has separate permissions for posting threads and replying. Just make it so only admins can post new threads but everyone can reply.

If I make 100 subforums can I use the Permission Duplication Tools to copy the permissions on to each of them, so I don't have to manually edit 8 usergroups 100 times?

Yes, the permission duplication tools would work well for that.

Also note that child forums inherit the permissions of the parent. If all of the subforums are under the same parent forum then you can just set the permissions once for the parent and they will be inherited.

    Thank the Lord.

    One last thing,

I want this forum visible, meaning you can see it on the board, but I don't want guests to be able to access it, how do I do that specifically for Forum A of this example?

Simply edit the guest permissions for that specific forum:

Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Permissions

After denying access for guests you can choose to show or hide that private forum with this setting:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Forum Listings Display Options -> Show Private Forums

You can also override this setting for individual forums:

Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Manager -> Edit Forum -> Show Private Forum

Ok before I start this I want to clarify one last thing.

Ok so here is my set up:

    Forum Category 123

    Forum A
    Forum B
    Forum C

Now in Forum A I have:

    Subforum A
    Subforum B
    Subforum C

Question 1: I am going to turn off posting Threads or Replies for Everyone in Subforums A B and C. But if I have Forum A act as a forum, can I still allow people to post in that forum, threads and posts?

Question 2: Can I turn HTML ON for the three subforums but turn it off for Forum A, so that the regular members cannot post HTML in threads in Forum A's post/thread section? WITHOUT it turning the HTML OFF in the subforums section?

    ------------------------

Question 3: How many Subforums will show per page before starting to show on a second page or is it limitless?

    1) Yes.

    2) Yes.

    3) It goes by depth, not by a maximum number of forums:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Forum Listings Display Options

Ok well that sounds to me like depth of the page. Is that something we control in our Admin CP in a template?

Or are you saying the natural forum has 20 to 25 threads showing on a page, if I have that, or 25 threads were up, or who knows 50 threads on 2 sep pages. How many subforums will show, or will all the subforums show regardless and it will just be a really long page?

I have no idea what this is gonna look like is my problem, and I'd love to see an example if anyone has ever put up a bunch of subforums on a page that also acts as a forum like Forum A will.

All forums will show that are within the depth specified in that section of your Admin CP.

    Category (depth 1)
    - Forum (depth 2)
    -- Subforum (depth 3)
    - Forum (depth 2)
    - Forum (depth 2)
    Category (depth 1)

The depths are relative to the current forum that you are viewing.

Sorry for buggin you here Jake, I know you're helping others to.

So...what happens though if I have lets say 30 subforums, and my depth is 3?

Are there then 10 pages of subforums?

    In this situation:

    Category (depth 1)
    - Forum (depth 2)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)
    - - Subforum (depth 3)

...all 30 subforums will show because they are all within the depth limit. It never paginates the forum lists.

    Ok hit another small snag,

I want to basically take Forum A and have no one post in it, not even an admin. I'm going to list all the subforums under Forum A of course.

But how do I get rid of the part I X'd in Red brush in this image? Without making Forum A a category. I understand that it can still be a child under a different forum category, but I don't like the way it looks on my index page. But then again, I don't like the way this looks in the Forum view. I want to get rid of the part that looks like it's, it's own forum, even to myself.

    How?

Edit that forum. Set this option to No:

Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Manager -> Edit Forum -> Act as Forum

Then you may want to change the look of that forum so it does not appear as a category. Copy the contents of this template:

    Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> « » -> Forum Home Templates -> forumhome_forumbit_level2_post

    ...into this template:

    Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> « » -> Forum Home Templates -> forumhome_forumbit_level2_nopost

Ok that sounds like a good solution.

I'm guessing if I do this it will change all forums that I try to do a similar forum set up with in the future since this is a template change.

It seems like one that can be easily reverted back if necessary.

I'll have to do this for all of my styles won't I?

SIDENOTE: What add on uses the attachment window like you guys have here? Or is it 3.7 standard?
