why isn't this already open so i can start typing instead of having to click on the icon before typing?
vBulletin Options > Message Posting and Editing Options > Quick Reply
Select "Yes, Click Not Required".

That's correct.
FreelanceGossip: If you allow Threaded view in your forums, you should leave it as required to click for Quick Reply otherwise the forums software won't know which post is being replied to in the case of quoting and such.
