Thread: Search finds Word - but not 'Word'

Search finds Word - but not 'Word'

    Scenario ...
We provide a site that discusses plant species.
Therefore thread titles show for example, as ...
Cucurbita maxima 'Atlantic' ( 'Atlantic' is the cultivar )

However the search function does not find the Title - Cucurbita maxima 'Atlantic' if only Atlantic is entered.

Is the only way I can resovle this to change all titles to look like this? ...

    Cucurbita maxima ' Atlantic '

... or is there a way that search can find the word inside '---' ?

Appreciate any advise. Our search function has been rendered useless by this

Apparently the search index includes single quotes in words...

The boolean search option is one alternative. You can test it on this forum:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/search.php

You would be able to enter this for the search criteria:

    Code:
    "Atlantic"
...where the double quotes delimit the search string. And the string itself can be a partial word (in this case, 'Atlantic' is a whole word).

Obviously the boolean option is in version 3.5 (the version of this forum). I forget if it is an option in 3.0.x.

    Hi Jake,
I tried out entering the word 'Tryitoutus' in the Title of a Test Thread here at vB3.5, and good news, entering the word Tryitoutus in the quick search box does find the thread Title 'Tryitoutus'.
So I may not have to go back and edit all the Plant species 'Cultivar' titles.

... If I was at the pumpkin fanciers forum, I too would be looking for Atlantic Pumpkin, (not Cucurbita maxima 'Atlantic')

But I'll need to upgrade to 3.5 as Atlantic doesn't find 'Atlantic' in my vB3

... waiting for a teeny but important hack to be ported first ...

Meanwhile, please do let me know if there is a way to tweek vB3 to get the above to work in the vB3 quick search box.

    Thanks,

    ~ Mark

Do you have the boolean option on your regular search form? If so, then it would be possible to add hidden form fields to the quick search form to make it boolean.
