[Forum] How to I get the Referral url links working for my Members?

How to I get the Referral url links working for my Members?

Here is what the FAQ in VB Version 4 says:

"Whenever you view a thread, you will find a link somewhere on the page which will allow you to send a brief message to anyone you like. Your referrer ID is added to the link you send, so if your friend registers on this forum as a result of viewing the link you sent to them, your referrals total will automatically be credited."

But where or how can a member use a direct link to send to another to register at >> forums/register.php ?

    Example Goof 1:
If our Member #63733 gives out the following referral link, his first and last name do not appear in the Referred By box:
The Private Investigators Discussion Forum is sponsored by the International Private Investigators Union (IPIU). To find out about IPIU, go to http://www.ipiu.org/ .

    PHP Code:
    http://www.ipiu.org/forums/register.php?referrerid=63733
    Example Go-Around 2:
If our Member #63733 gives out the following referral link to a "thread", and the guest clicks on the register.php link , then the Member's User Name appears in the Referred By Box where it should be:
http://www.pi-investigator.com/images/group20.jpg INSTRUCTIONS FOR FREE PASSWORD: If this is your first time here for applying for a FREE User Name and FREE password, Then click here: http://www.ipiu.org/forums/register.php?action=signup

    PHP Code:
    www.ipiu.org/forums/showthread.php?t=35763&referrerid=64728
    Can you help?

Click on thread tools. Select email this page. That's all there is to it.

That's just it, members have to click on a thread to email their referral ID to that particular thread (which is not the sign up register.php link to join the forum). I need to know how a member can email the link to the sign-up register.php link at a VB site where they can join (not read a thread).

        Hey David,

Just sent you a PM on .org, but also just tried your link here: http://www.ipiu.org/forums/register.php?referrerid=63733

I get "John Sanderson" as my referrer, it shows in the box just fine.

(Because this is all relating to cookies and stuff, it might be showing wrong for you due to the cookies in your browser not letting the value change. Try it on a different browser. )

Firefox 3.6 and IE8 (and for a laugh, IE9) - but I had only ever visited your site before when it was locked down, so wouldn't have had any/very many cookies set.

Can you try it using Chrome as a web browser?

Yeah, Chrome, it doesn't seem to show.

I'm pretty sure that this link (from vB3.x) should still work:

                  Code:
                  http://[COLOR=#ff0000]www.yoursite.com[/COLOR]/register.php?referrerid=[COLOR=#ff0000]X[/COLOR]
Of course replace the red text with your site's address and the red X with your user ID number.
