Ask your host to set up the value for max_allowed_packet in MySQL.

I have this error when users upload attachments.

What solution is possible if host decides not to increase the value for 'max_allowed_packet'in MySQL ? (because of shared hosting server)

What should be a good packetsize value ?

        Find a more flexible host?
What size attachments are your users trying to upload?
        Best Regards

The error is given while uploading a file bigger than approx 500 kB
