Attachments suddenly broke for no reason.

As with everything else on my forum, this has now just randomly broke.

For the last 2 years people would attach an image to their post in the "Advanced" area ... and the image would appear on their post.

    No problem.

Now every time I try to upload an image via ttachments, it shows up as a small thumbnail with a question mark graphic inside it.

Then when you click "Submit" the post shows the image as "image.jpg" clickable link instead of actually showing the image.

I have changed nothing in the admin from when it worked fine.

Please see attached image. Please advise.

Also - people were complaining that they couldn't upload images that were only 100kb in size.
That was a random change too. Had no problems prior.
I went into this page (see below) and nearly everything was set to "20,000" bytes maximum size.
There was also random "Max width" and "Max height" settings that didn't make much sense.

I had never even seen this page before.
Why would everything be set to a maximum image size of 20kb ??
So I changed most of them to 100,000 kb ... but then the above problem started (question mark and images not appearing in the actual posts).

I feel like this software is slowly falling apart.

Also was happening when we were on 5.3.3 however. Upgrading didn't fix it.
@ mark.b did you see anything in my settings (see images attached) that didn't look right?

I am just about to post and ask about the same issue, exact that now all the images are broken.
