If I would buy a SSL Certificate, how could I activate / integrate SSL in my forum?
How can I activate SSL in vbulletin?

You don't really activate SSL in vBulletin. If you assign an SSL certificate to your site, you would simply access vBulletin through the https:// url instead of the regular one. To do this, you simply need to update the Forum URL (and other URLS if set) under Settings -> Options -> Site Name / URL / Contact Details.Translations provided by Google.

For some pages you need to modify other templates, for example bbcode_video and humanverify_captcha. For a complete list search for src="http: in admincp->Search in Templates.
Also turn off admincp->Style & Languages->Use SkypeWeb Graphics.
You may want to try rebuilding CSS templates at admincp/template.php?do=rebuild&goto=index.php .
To redirect unencrypted pages to encrypted pages modify your .htaccess file with something like the following:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]Last edited by zylstra; Mon 12 Oct '15, 10:48pm.Comment

Wouldn't really recommend ssl as google will need to re-index your whole site in https and you will need to redirect your old http url's. Plus https is slower than http and is only really needed for signing in, admincp and registrations but as mentioned that would require custom coding.Comment

I recommend encrypting your websites for a couple different reasons.
First, the NSA and our government in general unfortunately have been overstepping their mandates. Encrypting your websites is a move toward more private and secure communications between two parties. This course is also being taken by the largest website on the internet and one of the most respected companies, Google.
Second, Google has mentioned that they may rank encrypted websites more highly than unencrypted websites.
Custom coding is not required to encrypt your websites.👍 1Comment

With the greatest of respect, that is a rather silly statement, sure it's desirable to encrypt your login and registration so that HACKERS can't steal your passwords, but to encrypt your entire site so that the NSA can't read your threads??? By the way if the NSA really want to decrypt your data as it travels the internet between your browser and server, they can.
...and as I mentioned, it takes time to encrypt/decrypt your data so https does slow your site down and as for custom coding, that is neccessary for just login and registration in ssl. As for google, they pretty much are IMO the NSA/US government.Last edited by donald1234; Mon 19 May '14, 1:57pm.Comment

So now that it's official that google will impact rank based on the site being SSL encrypted, we need a good guide on how to go about getting this doneComment

vBulletin 4 doesn't directly support SSL and never has. It probably never will. Here are the steps to access your site under SSL:
1) Apply an SSL certificate to your domain and hosting package.
2) Create an htaccess file to redirect http:// requests to https:// requests in your vBulletin forum directory. If you do not know how to do this, it falls under your Hosting Provider's Support.
3) Update the Forum URL under Settings -> Options -> Site Name / URL / Contact Details to reflect https:// instead of http://
You're forums are now running under SSL.Translations provided by Google.

Not sure about Apache, but for Nginx I have had SSL running with Google SPDY based SSL on vBulletin 4. All you need is a minor modification in vB4 code as per Jira at http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBIV-15721
But as stated above, all your themes and styles externally referenced urls would need to changed from http:// reference to either https:// or just // and let the browser choose
for instance
Code:<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/js/header-rollup-512.js"></script>
Code:<script type="text/javascript" src="//www.vbulletin.com/forum/js/header-rollup-512.js"></script>

Looks like google are going to be using https enabled sites as a ranking signal in their alogorithm google blog but you need a dedicated IP address for it to work properly. I rather doubt if there are enough IPv4 addresses to go round.👍 1Comment

I'm switching to SSL now too, and this URL is giving me issues:
Insecure URL: http://www.domain.com/forum/images/icons/icon1.png
In the post incons section of the AdminCP I've updated the URL, as well as all others, but this one for some reason still showing http://. How can I resolve this?
Thanks.
