  • [Forum] Spambots overwhelming server with registration requests

    Hi all,

I recently upgraded to v4 and have been using various built-in and add-on features to stem the tide of spam on my forums, mostly with good results. However, I have a new problem: bots spamming requests to the registration page. I am getting a million or more hits on this request daily:

    vb/register.php?do=addmember

That is, even in stopping them from signing up and posting, the spambots are overwhelming my site. The only way I've been able to stop this is by disabling registration.

vB support says they can't really do anything about it, which makes sense. One option is mass-blocking IP ranges of the geographical areas most often responsible, which I'm discussing with my web host. But that has its own issues.

I was just wondering if anyone here had any other, more creative ideas about what could be done to help deal with this. I saw a thread somewhere that mentioned renaming register.php to something else.. would that work, and how involved would it be?

    Thanks,

    Charles

Renaming register.php in itself would break, since any other calls to that file as you move through the registration process would fail.

May be worth looking at vB Bad Behavior, a modification available for free on vbulletin.org. Though please note we can't provide support for modifications.

This modification stopped every bot in its tracks...

Then I use this to track users...

Then the few that get through I use my modification...

First of all you can expend Q&A to like 10 - 20 questions and answers (AdminCP -> Settings -> Human Verification Manager), then you can use modifications (can be found at www.vbulletin.org) to prevent spammers like SPAM-O-Matic. Here you will find a thread on how to prevent spammers from registering on your forum (please keep in mind that we don't officially support third party modifications):

Here you will find a post about how to reduce spam and registration bots:

Also have a look at AdminCP -> Settings -> Options -> Spam Management.
