Recommended PHP and MySQL

I am running two VBulletin forums on a VPS server. I have just updated one of them to 4.2.3. I just updated the other one to 3.8.8. What versions of PHP and MySQL should I get installed. I'm not running 5.3.29 which is end of life. I will probably end up updating the 3.8.8 site also but just curious what versions of th MySQL and PHP I should run. If I upgrade the 3.8.8 to 4.4.3 will that change the answer?

PHP 5.4 or 5.5 (upgrade to vB 3.8.9). MySQL, run the latest that is stable.
