Please forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong forum...

Ok, so I had created a Dev board at one of my sites with a legal license (of course) for vBulletin... It was password protected etc. The point of it was.. I've been building different modifications etc on it for a future site I would like to launch. That's usually how I do things (Make the mods on a dev board, then go buy the domain and another vB license if the whole development things goes well, and launch the site... I do it this way in case something during development goes wrong to make me not want to finish the site LOL I'm so wishy washy sometimes).. Well unfortunately I just found out from my host that the mods I was working on were for a site that violates their TOU so I had to completely remove that Dev board from my server. So now I'm just lost on how to proceed. I understand that my dev board HAS to be on the server with my live licensed site so to speak. Which in my case can't happen. And I really don't want to buy another vB license if I decide never to launch this site. All I need is a place to build mods, test them, etc and not violate anyone's TOU.

After all that needless babble (that's more venting than anything, I'm so mad at my host for being so picky... it wasn't that I was DOING something on the site to make it against their TOU it was that it mentioned something that you weren't allowed to do on your site.. for example... TOU says you can't play games on your site... so I was in violation of the TOU by mentioning playing games on another site LOL)... Anyways... My only idea is to install a copy of vB on my Mac... work on the mods... and if I get everything programmed and still think its a good idea... THEN get a domain, (a new host for it) and another vB license... But is this legal? Other can access my computer but I can password protect it just like I had to on the web.

Please respond... and I'm so sorry about all the babbling... Guess I'm just having a bad day.

Thank you, Bree

With vBulletin you can translate into many different languages using our Language Manager in the admin control panel. This allows you to translate the vBulletin language into your own language or several languages, as well as being able to import language packs created by others. Your users can then select the language they prefer to view the board in.
Please note, the Language Management System only covers the board text and not individual posts. The posts themselves will be displayed in the original language they were written in.

I'm a little confused about the new pricing structure. I purchased an owned license this year for $180. My intent was to keep buying upgrades for $40 per year. However, with the new system, I would have to pay $195 to continue with the forum and get the upgrades or right now I can get the suite for $160 which will give me the upgrades too. However, if I had purchased the $100 1 year license, it looks like my price would be the same. Is that correct? So if I were to upgrade, I would have the license for the same amount of time and same benefits as if I had went with the 1 year, but it would have cost me $80 less?

Three very important questions for me as I steer my cruiseliner of a VB3.8 + GARS + PhotoPost forum towards VB4 or an alternative in the future.

*Firstly, will VB4 have a way to allow blog posts...

Three very important questions for me as I steer my cruiseliner of a VB3.8 + GARS + PhotoPost forum towards VB4 or an alternative in the future.

Firstly, will VB4 have a way to allow blog posts to have a "read more" style functionality (where the author can determine the exact place to split the post into a teaser and the full article)? Currently blog in VB3.8 does a nasty "chop" at the number of characters defined in the blog admin screen, and doesn't appear to have this functionality. Looking at pages like http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/blog.php it would seem this functionality exists as your blog posts are nicely chopped off at an appropriate point, but I don't think I can test the blog functionality without installing VB4 locally to determine this.

Secondly, does VB4 allow linking of other content/custom fields to articles? I'm about to embark on a very ambitious membership-created-articles project using GARS. GARS has a very useful feature called "Modules" (Tutorial 101, 102) which essentially allows custom fields for articles. I am using these fields to allow an article to have a list of links, a list of specific related articles, a list of specific related threads, and shortly lists of other related data. These "related data" and "related content" lists appear in sideboxes next to the article, and at the end of the article. The article (id) is the common link between all the otherwise disparate pieces of information.

Being able to link articles to multiple other forms of content is going to be critical to my long term plan. I don't think it's a particularly strange request or need - you see blogs and articles all over the net doing this kind of thing (eg: techcrunch links a blog post with the bio of any companies discussed in the blog post). Does VB4 allow this kind of association between articles and other content? I am a decent PHP/MySQL programmer - would it be hard to implement it?

Lastly, what form internally do VB4 articles, blogs, and posts take? Are they all really "posts" using BBcode as the formatting? Do they all live in the posts table or does each content type have its own table in the database?

Thank you sincerely in advance for any insight you can give me as I weigh up whether to wait for VB4 or lock myself into GARS which might make future upgrading the VB4 problematic or impossible.

Hello,

I have a client that I am building a website for who needs a forum. I currently have an ASP forum installed in her site because that is what I am use to programming in.. my experience with PHP is somewhat limited. Anyway, I have her site set up so that she has a header, footer and content area. The content area is nothing more than a cell in a table <td> and is set for a specific width.

What I need to know is, how hard is it to completely wrap a website around the forum application so that it shows up in the content area of the table? The test forum I have running now was really easy... I just had to go to the custom_header and custom_footer files in the template directory and add my code... all pages were automatically updated. Is it similar with this software? Unfortuantely, I am looking at using Censura review software and they only share login data with a handful of forums, including this one, so my current ASP forum would have to have its own separate user registration, which I am trying to avoid.

Any info provided would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Is it possible to purchase the suite to get all of the features for the community (blogs/forums) and host it say as community.website.com and not on website.com (and the link to the community on the content site would just go to the VB community), have the CMS portion turned off still use Drupal for my content portion of the site? Difficult to explain in a post, but basically can you use all of the community aspects BUT not the CMS portion?

Second question is where are some good places to find someone to have this installed and have it match the scheme and colors of my current site?

A client site currently running has two sections: Public and viewers can see all materials including on-line forms. The main activity is done via a second portion of the site which requires Username/Password.

Is it possible to structure vBulletin (the forum/blog section) to operate within both sections of the site? In other words, can public viewers use certain forums while private accss viewers can also use the forum but, within the secured portion of the site?

If so, how would this be accomplished?

Thank you very much.

I'd like to use the CMS for the front page...and obviously...keep the /forums directory for the forums.

However, I don't see an option for this in the admin cp. The install needs to be in the /forums directory apparently. Do I have to change my entire site structure? Or is there an easier to to have the CMS in the root and the forums in the /forums directory?

One of my friends runs a site using vBulletin, and with his current cash state, I don't think he could afford vB so I am thinking he is using a nulled copy. Before I report him, could I ask what you do when you find out someone is using a nulled copy? Do you just ask them to remove it and then if they don't, take legal action? I just don't want my friend to get into trouble.

Hello everyone,

I've been doing a fansite for a game for about a year and a half now, and my site is finally getting pretty big (about 8000-9000 people visiting each day). I'm finally getting enough ad money to support my hosting costs and have a little leftover, and I've been thinking about using that extra cash towards upgrading the site to use something with a bit more compatibility and support for what I want to do.

Here is how my site is set up right now: My news page runs on wordpress, as does my media gallery (which currently only includes pictures), and is connected via WP-United to phpbb3 (for cross posting and a shared theme). I have a drupal installation set up to allow my site members to share mod files for a game (Torchlight, if you are interested). I have several mediawiki installations set up to support multiple languages, although English is mainly the only one that gets regular updates.

My original intent was to try to have a system set up where members could just have a single login that allows them to access the forums, drupal, and the wikis. Unfortunately, all of the various integration modules have a lot of problems, and I ended up having to break apart everything other than the wordpress-phpbb3 connection (which is only enabled for cross-posting for staff members). I had problems with user information and passwords either not syncing or being unable to be changed, complete and utter caching failures, plugin and forum mod conflicts, RSS feeds breaking, and a lot more. I'm at a good point to consider something a bit more advanced that is actually made to work together and has reliable support, which has brought me to look at vbulletin.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to phrase my questions. I'll just list them and then give an explanation:

Is it possible to import JUST the names and passwords of users from phpbb3, mediawiki, and drupal6 into one combined vbulletin database?

Can I import all of my wordpress posts and phpbb3 posts and forums into vbulletin? (Preferably, keeping the names of the posters attached to the correct account)

Is there any kind of mediawiki replacement available for vbulletin? If so, does it allow imports from mediawiki?

Is it possible to maintain a joint user database between drupal and vbulletin? (I can't alter the drupal installation because of the way its file sharing database is set up)

Can I use vBulletin to create a media gallery that has pictures, movies, audio and their associated viewers with vbulletin, AND only allow staff members to add content to that section?

My first question is particularly important, because I originally went from SMF to phpbb3, and in doing so I caused problems with how the database was set up, forever requiring a special verification file to be included in my phpbb installation. If necessary I am willing to sacrifice my current forums, only importing usernames from drupal and mediawiki, if I can somehow import all of the old phpbb3 posts into a locked archived forum where all of the original posters are simply listed as guests or something.

I'm hoping to simplify things by switching to a single can-do-everything software so that I don't have to deal with the hassle of multiple theme maintenance, multiple registrations for a single site, and other conflicts. I'm also hoping that by unifying everything I can cut down on system resources, since I won't need multiple installations of everything running all at the same time.

Any answers or advice is appreciated.

(Oh, and just so you know, it says I can add 5 tags underneath my post, but if I try to do more than 2 tags it tells me I am over the limit. Bug/typo?)
