Hey,

YES, I SOUND LIKE A NOOB!!! :(

We're connecting via Nildram (http://www.nildram.co.uk) at 512kb/s ADSL. My desktop has no ethernet card and connects through an Alcatel SpeedTouch 330 modem (http://www.speedtouch.com/prod330.htm). My laptop has a 10/100 LAN card, a RG-11 modem connector and a RJ-45 Ethernet connector.

We're looking to share the 512kb/s ADSL connection between the desktop and the laptop. We don't have a router yet, so we're open to suggestions. Would the router work? How will it work with the desktop, how do we connect it? As I said, we haven't used or had a router before, so we're kinda in the dark about this.. :p

We don't have loads of money to spare, so which option would be the cheapest? We also don't need wireless connectivity. Which make should we go for? Please also be aware we're not located in the US, we're in the UK!

Lots of questions ;)

Thanks for ANY help on this matter.

You'll want to buy a router, PCI ethernet card, and 3 RJ-45/ethernet cables.

PCI network card in desktop, £10.

10 meter X-over cable , err £5 or something, I usually make them from a reel of RJ-45 I've got.

Allow internet sharing on the desktop, job done.

Though desktop would have to be on for the laptop to work.

Other wise its a router, for the ADSL then wire in the desktop and laptop separately.

His computer doesn't have an RJ45 jack to begin with, he would need 2 cards to do that.

His laptop already has a NIC. So what Jerry has said is correct that he needs a nic for the desktop and that what he has taken into account in the 1st line of his post.

You can ditch the ADSL modem for a router with a built in ADSL modem.

Yeah that's what I did to get a shared connection between my Computer and XBox

I have a cable modem attached to a router which connects both of my computers to the internet. I've had no problems.
