Didn't call this thread 'discuss' because it sounds too much like a nasty question in an exam...

Erm, anyway - as usual, please don't use this thread to ask for technical support or to report bugs. Please use the appropriate forums for that.

Off you go :)

WOO! I'M THE 4TH ONE TO REPLY!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH VB DEVELOPMENT TEAM!

Wow, really been a long journey, over a year in the testing (much in longer in the making) and we finally have vB3 GOLD! Wow I could almost cry right now from happiness. I would just like to thank the development team for putting up with us, and for your COUNTLESS hours of development! I don't think there will ever be another forum brand that will ever surpass vBulletin (even the 2.x series can be considered legendary).

Cheers everyone! Today truly will be a day that our entire vBulletin community will NEVER forget!

Regards,
Patrick :')

PS: Yes, I was so excited that I typed this out in advance and had it sitting in a notepad document...

Hey, no new favicon?

Ian Gordon
Fri 19th Mar '04, 11:24pm
I must say, I am a bit let down...from a overall aspect is just look like you installed a portal and updated some of the core graphics (buttons and icons). I know bugs were fixed and such but...i donno just a little bit dissapointed.

LordJMann
Fri 19th Mar '04, 11:28pm
The new graphics seem alot tackier than the old ones... They just don't fit vBulletin like they should. Was a little surprised... The homepage doesn't look anything like I thought it would, was kinda hoping for something other than a portal (They are over-used to death). But none the less, good release.

Umm. What exactly did you expect? We have known for a long time that the style was finalized, and that only new graphics would be with the final version.

Wow ... umm this just makes me think, I used to use illegal UBBS back in the day and I thought vB 2.2.5 SUCKED! THen I tried one from somewhere. And was members of tons. Loved vB. After I became a Admin of a vB I was like if I get a site I am buying a vB. That day came about a half a year ago and I got a vB now. And I saw the making of vB3 from the begining ... long struggle ... but we made it! Love the new graphics ... bit odd but hey it's all good.

I thought the liquid style was now the default style?

Here at the VB forum it is still the "Fixed" style, not liquid. I had to go down to the bottom of the page and change it to view in "Liquid" style. No big deal, just wondering.

Liquid wasnt the default for me either. I had to manually change it to view the Liquid skin. And after having done so, I must say that the New Thread Post Repl;y buttons look horrible with this skin. Jaggies and off color masking used in the transparency. Yuck.

But the software still kicks ass. :D

Good work vB. You guys have got something amazing here, and I know it will show. I don't think people understand the great barrier you guys created between you and the other forum software titles with your enormous manual. That will pay off big time I believe

Also, thanks for doing away with the traditional buttons and smilies. It was about time that someone broke away from the norm and did something fun :) As for you people complaining... Kier and the other devs didn't work so damn hard on the template system just so you could bitch about the default buttons. If you don't like em, get some new ones :p

such very very very ugly graphics, ok that's not alot coming from a man who hates the default white and opts for the grey whenever possible but really the graphics really don't go with the rest of the skin.

omg, this images really suck.

They look to much '3D' or to blurred. Hard to describe really.

And those new smilies don't fit to the professional vB3 style. They look like they came from a kindergarten community.

All in all very disappointing. Now i don't know why i wanted that images so badly. I can only hope some will make new images and post them over at vbt.com.

But it's a pain in the ass that I ordered my license at vbulletin-germany.com. They decided to release vbulletin 3.0.0 'Gold' not until Monday. Crap! :mad:I agree with that. Good job, guys!

I'm also waiting for the German version.

The only good thing is, that you still can download the "Graphics Develop Kit vBulletin 2" from vbulletin-germany.com. ;)

I consider to use the old images, because they are looking much more professional.

Well done on finally releasing the finished product!

I have to agree with several others though that the graphics are dreadful, very childish looking. Also on this site the "New Thread" and "New Reply" buttons are extremely poor, with "bitty" white marks around them/on the background. But like others it's no big deal, I'll just stick with the old ones.

Great job on the relase :) Thank you! Thank you!

The only thing I'm not excited about are the new graphics. They seem both jagged-edged yet somewhat blurry at the same time. Maybe it's just my flat screen here, but the old graphics are much crisper then the new ones.

Is there any chance there will be additional new image sets provided, maybe a more serious less 3D less Windows XP / Invision board looking and maybe a sharper set? If not, thats ok too. I liked the old ones and can continue to use them and be 100% happy.

I've upgraded through every one of the betas and each of the RC's. Tonight I upgraded to Gold.

Smooth upgrade, and everything is running FAST and reliably.

Actually, they are anti-aliased for the white background and not the gray background. I would suspect that gray versions of the graphics will come eventually. The default style though is a white background.

Whoo whoo great thing to wake up to, but chances are I wont have time to install until Sunday night :(

And I just pulled one of my girlfriends curls (hair ;)) from my keyboard, its hella long. Cant be good.

I actually kinda like the new graphics, the only ones I am a bit iffy about are the folders. They seem a bit flat in comparison to the other images.

But great work guys (downloads). :)

I have upgraded our production-board now, went without problems in about 15 minutes (including backup of database). Already installed one hack again. And will install others next week.

About the graphics: Don't worry too much about the ones who don't like them. I for my part love them. The old ones where too business-like. The new ones are perfect and I will make them available sooner or later on our board too. Mostly because our board is a comic-board and it needs some fresh graphics :) But also because the old reputation-button has one big problem. On it you see a "Haken" (Hook in english) and a "Kreuz" (Cross in English). And if you ask someone to use the "Haken-Kreuz-Taste" (Hook-Cross-Button) in order to give a reputation in Germany this is not that good... The "Hakenkreuz" was the symbol of the nazis. And there was one who was complaining about this. *sigh* The new reputation-button is MUCH better :)

And who doesn't like them: Make your own. Or ask at vbulletintemplates.com or on other style-sites for different ones. It's not that hard to do that. Or use the Graphic Developer Kit to change them - or whatever.

hmm, good to get my hands on the Gold at last, but as the guys have said above, I’m not too impressed with the graphics :(. They just don’t seem to have that ‘solid’ feel anymore. Think I’ll stick with the old ones.

That's the problem when you anti-alias "transparent" gifs, it's going to make life more difficult for those who modify styles. I know the old gifs might not be so "fun" or whatever these new ones are, but they were very easy to put across various styles and colours.

However, only having graphics to grumble about means you've obviously done a good job on the coding, which is by far the more important issue!

Sat 20th Mar '04, 6:06am
Well....

The negative
The graphics : the moment I saw them for the first time I thought 'My god!'. I honestly was a bit dissappointed. I totally agree with was has been said in this thread about them (tacky, childish, not professional, doesn't fit with the great VB overall style, etc...) I sometimes do not understand the decisions Jelsoft makes concerning the graphical layout of VB (remember the AdminCP style before the default VB3 style was available).

The positive
Everything else! : the moment I saw The Manual (with a capital M) for the first time I thought 'My God'! :) It is really unbelieveable what you guys did with this VB3 manual. I am overwhelmed by it : it is really fantastic.

In the end the negative part of this Gold release (the graphics) is not really an issue, because this graphic-release will motivate the community to develop better graphics on their own.

Seeing all these PHPBB2 boards over the net I must say that with this VB3 release I am very proud to own/use a VBulletin board. Thank you for accomplishing that!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but will the online manual be made available for download? I run a local server for development and I like having manuals like that one available to me while I code without having to be online, just like with the php manual etc. I know there is the "all on one page" file, but I prefer having it all divided in the frames like in the online manual. Any feedback is appreciated.

Btw, great work on vB3 Gold, will be upgrading my forums to it very shortly. :)

I am delighted the hard work has now come to fruition and vb3.0.0 has gone gold..well done guys!

I'll be upgrading my development board soon so I can start work on hacking it, the intention being to upgrade the main board some time in the summer.

The new graphics are good, EXCEPT the last post arrows...the old ones were very distinctively vbulletin and to me were almost like a seal of quality for a board, the new ones just look like any other board which is a shame. But that's a very minor grumble and I'd like to congratulate the whole team on a superb job that should keep vB at the forefront of forum standards for a long time to come!

kinda dissapointed w images myself. its like we are using phpbb nowYes, I must agree. I am, well, disappointed with the new images. The first thing that came to mind when I loaded was the forums was "is this phpBB?" I've always thought of vBulletin as a more professional, business type forum.

But these new pictures, are, just... too "MSN" like...

I think I'll be sticking to the old ones. Are there any new images (I mean, I know they are all new, but are there any new images with new file names?) so if I were to keep the old images, would anything stop working?

I got up this morning and went directly to vbulletin.com and to the forums and was seriously disappointed.

It is good to finally have vB3.0.0 out as the latest version. I will, of course, be upgrading to this version. However, as many people here and on my own forums have said, the graphics are a BIG disappointment.

I understand that some people want something new and original but I feel that the new images let the default style down. The similies do not go with the default blue and I preferred the RC similies. The post icons look tacky, really tacky, and are too big and don't go with the professional blue/silver style. The other images are ok, but not great. One of the major plus sides of vB when I reviewed it for my site and Sitepoint was the default style and graphics - they were professional and went well with the default style. Now they don't.

Of course, that doesn't really matter if you're not intending to use the default style, which many people won't be. And there is still the GDK. However, I shall be - the blue goes with my site colours and although I shall be editing some of the colour scheme, I do want to use the default imageset. Now I won't be - I shall either find a new set or use the RC images.

Perhaps Jelsoft could release a tarted up RC imageset. There were some images there that still used the old vB2 purple and I'm sure it wouldn't take too long to change them to blue. People could then have the choice to use the new ones or stick with the old ones.

I suppose that is just my opinion. vB is still the best forum software available, just the default images that let it down.

Two small things to point out:

However with the announcement of new graphics for Gold, I cant help to be disappointed in them. They just dont look all that good. I guess I was expecting something a little more sharper (yes, anti-alias, i know). But they are only graphics, and I can change these to suit my forum.

No biggie. The main aspect, the forum, itself, is superb.

Tremendous job on the forum guys. This is fantastic software, and I even like the new images.

However, if I weren't already a loyal customer, I don't think the new website would sell me. It's too generic now, and doesn't have the focus the other one did. Plus the font is tiny, which is harder to read and doesn't capture my attention nearly as well. Plus there is too much going on. With the old site, reading the benefits of vBulletin seemed like it was obviously the part I should be focusing on, but now with everything so small and bland I'd probably just move on to the next site.

Don't forget vb dev's....not all admins of forums are knowledgable in changing, editing, creating new graphics etc. There should be any easy method for the less PC-savy admins to change their graphics either back to the old or to new future graphics that are much more attractive and appealing.

Otherwise, there will be many people unhappy with the way their forum looks and not be able to correct the situation....then they will just be stuck with a forum they are not happy with.

Maybe there could be a script package that will install the modified or new graphics with little confusion for these people.

In situations like this, I find it very frustrating that everybody's answer to these things is "well, you can change it back" or "you can create your own" or "you can find new graphics and add them". Well, this is fine for those of you that know how to do this....there are paying vb customers that do not know how to do these things.

Please come up with a simple method for those of us that don't know how to do these things ok?

Thanks.

In some ways, the new buttons look a lot like IPB (Invision Power Board for those who don't know). That I'm not too fond off. That's why I was curious as to whether there was an image kit available for vB3. But, I'm going to stick with my existing images for now I think.

As expected the new graphics are the talk of the town with all the fixes and updates all but ignored. Personally I'm split on liking them or not. I think the buttons for "Post Reply", "Quote", "Quick Reply", online indicators, etc turned out very nicely and look better than the old VB2 versions however many of the icons, like those for new messages in the various forums, are too AOL-ish IMO. Just seems to take away from the professional image of VB and tailor it toward the less experienced home user types. As Wayne pointed out, they are easily changeable for those that wish to.

For me the big thing is that VB is now finally "final" and other companies will no longer be able to use the "we're waiting for final release" excuse to update their own integration scripts. Credit goes to PhotoPost.com for keeping up with each and every RC but many others out there have not bothered and are just now starting to look at supporting VB3 integration.

Let's remember what's important here... we now have all the bug fixes and an officially stable forum on our sites.

This is a little rude. I also am not over keen on them all - some I like though, I think if people are really against them, they could use the old icons or create their own set - there are also sites which offer sets of icons (often for free) but there is certainly no need to demand someone changes them, at least not in this tone. It's fair enough we don't like something but maybe we could be a little more appreciative that we've got gold.

I'm very glad to get the Gold release, the kits and the manual - I'm hopeless at graphics so although I'm not 100% keen on them, they are still 1000 times better than I could create so I appreciate the work that has gone into making them, thank you.

Too bad they didn't release some of the new graphics with the RC versions,
so they could have received feedback on how customers like them. That would have allowed time for changes to be made before the Gold release, so the graphics would have been something the majority approves. Seems like only a few people have expressed any positive feedback regarding the new graphics.

I definitely think the main website looks much better. :)

The bug fixes and other improvements are outstanding !!

When about 30 users of over 30.000 disagree, you call that a majority? Oh come on. If it would be 3.000 who disagree, now that would be a nice disagreement. How about the ones who don't say anything?

I would recommend opening up a poll and see what it says.

The images make it look cheap and nasty like ones on yabb or phpbb or invision.

Ah well ive bought skins anyway so i dont care.

It is a shame though, to have to revert backwards when using the latest, Gold version. Seems like that is counter-productive to have to use parts of old releases to make the Gold release seem right. Shouldn't the latest release (the Gold), have the most popular features that the majority of the paying customers prefer?

I am talking about the paying customers (admins) who run the forums, not the members of the forums.

The posts on this forum should be representative example of the percentage of the overall customers.

The hard core customers hang out on this forum and seem to be the ones that care the most about vb3. The majority of the posts on this forum seem to say that they do not care for the new graphics. I think this represents a true demographic of vb3 admins.

A poll on this subject would be very good indeed. I also think that everybody should run this same poll on their own forums just to see what all the members think about this.

It may be but there are over 30,000 people registered on this forum even plus there are more vBulletin owners than that.

How many of those 30,000 customers have contributed to the bug tracker process?

The active people of this forum seem to have the most impact on the development and helping the developers with these things.

it is always YOUR decision, if you use different graphics than the ones provided by Jelsoft. There are plenty of styles for free on vbulletintemplates.com - I myself have released one there. You can make your own. There is a Graphical Development Kit. Download it, change it to your needs. But please stop complaining about the new graphics.

BTW: On our production board we gave our users to revert back to the old graphics.

I don't see why only the ones who have contributed to the beta-process should decide over the design. Of course they helped on the process. But this isn't a reason why they should have more rights than the others.

We have the right as paying customers to express our opinions here on this forum regarding the new graphics. This thread is meant for things like that.

I myself have been very polite about my dislike of the new graphics. I am disappointed though at some of the members' rude methods of stating their opinions. I am not trying to hurt the vb devs feelings at all. I have noticed that several people have stated their opinion in a mean-spirited and rude way. I will never do this.

Obviously, if the others have not spoken...then they probably do not care one way or the other. The people that do speak up care enough to do so. There are "Leaders" and there are "Followers". That is the way this world is. Someone has to speak up. :)

BUT: Where can I put the ones who don't care? To the ones who like the graphics or to the ones who don't like them? I would tend to the first, just because if they would not like them, they would complain - or not? So...

That's not what he said though, Mr. Bernd. You said the number of people objecting to the graphics was small when compared to the total Vbulletin userbase. However, only the people who have actively contributed with feedback, while equal to the others, can be counted as people with an "opinion". Other people may have an opinion but don't post: it's this "team" of actively contributing members where you have to start counting opinions, not the userbase as a whole.

A poll is nice, but fairly useless: these are the final graphics. :) As I said though, I'm just going to design my own ones. :) For the rest, I love this release!

I must agree with many of the guys here saying that the graphics is a dissapointment... Other than that, I think that it's great to finally have vb3.0 gold here and I must say that you've done a hell of a job... But I will not use the images... I just hope that Delhaze will update vbuttonpro for 3.0.

I've been eagerly awaiting vB3 Gold to be released... I'll now be eagerly awaiting some new graphics packs from vbulletin-templates.com that don't suck. :o
