I am about to get a dedicated server from ServerMaxtrix. Due to the amount of money I can afford, I would like to get the cheapest server if possible. That's why I am going for the Celeron ones.

Question 1:
I am wondering if the Celeron 1.7G server good enough for:

Members: 3,974, Threads: 9,335, Posts: 227,551

We have around 40 active visitors during the day time and 60-80 visitors during the night time.

How good can the Celeron servers handle??? Please give me an idea ?

Question 2:
When I rent the server ? Do I just go for the default options ? Are there anything that I have to choose to make my vB works there? (such as MySQL? is it built in by default ???)

Question 3:
Beside uploading the files and create an account on mysql for vB, anything that I have to do before setting up vB in ServerMaxtrix server?

Thanks for reading and hope you guys can help <me> <noob> out ~

IMO you should go for the SS24 (https://www.servermatrix.com/solutions/ss28_server.html) which is a P4 2.8Ghz with 1024mb RAM. We currently have the Super Gamerz 3.0 server with them. You should also get cPanel for an extra $20/mo as you can easily upgrade your server should you have no previous experience.

Before (or even after) setting up the forums, you should request a new config in the Server Configuration forum.

The celeron can handle that load quite easily. That is the machine that I have for my personal sites. You may run into trouble later when your forum gets larger though.

I would upgrade to at least 1024 MB of RAM on the server.

Sure, it'd handle it - I've had a celeron before pushing around 300gb bandwidth a month, 512mb ram, 1gig swap (with a few meg used). Considerable differences and improvements have been noticed after the move to P4.

Make sure you know how to lock down the server!

Thanks guys ~ I think I will go for the Celeron first...bandwidth is really what I am looking for since we will be hosting some video files.

By the way, what do "lock down the server" means??

Lock down means to make it secure.

I would tell you but I don't know how to lock down a Linux server; although I know how to lock down Windows 2003, it is easy.
