Hey,
Here is my little suggestion that would take only a few minutes to implement.
Basically, do what phpBB does. They first page of install.php is a screen where you type your host, database, username and password.
I'm sure adding this to vBulletin would make everyones life easier. No more editing of the config file. If you mucked your password up you just go back to install.php and redo enter it. You can also change the details in the CP if you change host, etc.
I personally think that you should implement this, and hope many others will. Well, we'll see!

This has been considered, and *might* be a possiblity.... the only drawback in then you need to make sure you change the permissions for the admin/config.php file, which could then be a security concern.

You could automatically change the permissions using php. I've seen it somewhere.
It would work

But many people here use Windows servers - you can't auto-change file permissions on those :)

OK,...
Hmm...
Well, its still a posibilty..
Solution:
Step 1: get Username/Host/Passowrd/DB
Step 2: Create a random file which name is recorded in the database
Step 3: Add details to that file

My only question is... "Why?"
What is so incredibly complicated about editing the config.php file? I think that should be a prerequisite. If you don't have the intelligence to edit a simple file, how are you going to be able to think through "harder" things like templates and permissions.

Its a matter of saving time.
It gets annoying if you upload, find out you gotta edit the file. You then edit, upload, find your password is wrong. Reedit, upload then works.
It is just easier.
I really don't mind except I've found some people that have found it hard to edit the file. As they might not know their settings and constatnyl have to upload it,.
Thats just my 2Cents

I don't care how slow your connection is, you could be on a 14.4 modem and it wouldn't not save you any time. Either you have to download and upload the max of 5K of HTML and form, or you FTP the same amount of data onto the server. How is the time saved again?

Why do you need to change it so often? I set my config.php up when I installed vB and haven't needed to change it since, even after version changes.
You can only simplify things so much before it gets rediculous.

ok,
It does save time, even though i'm on a cable connection and i personally haven't had to keep changing the config file, i know people that have though.

Why do you have to keep changing the config file?

Even if you told it to make a random file for the user/pass, there are programs that can find that file on the server and download it.
Just do a search at download.com for offline viewing.
It's not that great of a feature, it doesn't take more then 10-20 seconds to change the config.php file.

I personally think this is an unneeded feature and a security risk.
It takes 20 seconds to edit the file and another 1 to upload it.
If you make a mistake you don't need to re-download it but simply upload it again.
I agree with the statements above that this is not a burden and can be overcome with a little common sense and intelligence.
