WinXP, how to get in DOS mode?

    Hey all

I want to flash my bios but i can only be done in dos mode...

How can i get there? I don't have a floppy drive installed so a bootable disk would be quite useless

    any tips are welcome
    That's the end of that!

You could try Booting in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

RUN --> type cmd and hit "enter"

There is no real DOS in WinXP... Just a command prompt. That should do it.

Hmmm...I think I've heard that Win XP doesn't have a real DOS mode, just emulated (ie: by running the command cmd.

Windows 9x is based on DOS, whereas Windows XP is based on the NT kernel, so there is no real DOS. (This was said before, but I figured I'd give a history lesson )

You can't flash your BIOS from within a DOS session running in WinXP.

You need to boot up with a floppy with DOS system files (usually from WinME) and the BIOS flash file on it. If you don't have a floppy, you could try burning the WinME DOS system files and the flash BIOS update BIN file onto a CD and booting with that but your system might not support this method. What about an external floppy?

I'm not sure how that would help. You need to boot into DOS and have the computer execute the flash file. It's the kind of thing you want to do correctly or risk hosing your motherboard. IMO you should wait until you can do it properly.

Just boot a win98 floppy, put the flash util on it, with the new bios file.
Run the flash util off the floppy, you dont need to access the operating system during the flash,, just the CMOS chip, dont forget to backup your old bios first..
NT has never had DOS, just WOW and VDM..

This can also be done using a bootable CD of Windows 9x

He is right and you can boot with win98 if it is the full version and not an upgrade version.. you could use win95 too...

When it boots you will get some options on how to boot and just tell it to boot to the prompt or with cd rom support...

Have the files copied onto the floppy and go to A:

You can get to DOS from win98 I have done it many times...

                              *skipped most of thread*

Go to your bios and tell it too boot from CD

and stick your win9x CD in

it should say something like "start windows installation"
                              "boot with CD rom support"
                              "boot without CD rom suport"

Choose either of the CD/non CD support ones and it should run a few commands of its own then throw you into dos.
