I am looking at starting a single online forum using vBulletin with HiveMail integration. I will be purchasing a dedicated box for this service. This will be the only application operating on this box, but it will need to contain all the necessary components to make the service function (with the exception of a DNS service which will be hosted on a separate box). So here is my question. How many average/max concurrent users can I expect to be able to support with the configurations listed below before the service slows down. Speed is of the utmost importance.

Celeron 1.2Ghz Processor

1GB of RAM

60GB IDE Drive

OR
P4 2.4Ghz Processor

1GB of RAM

80GB IDE Drive

Either server would have

Red Hat Linux 9.0

Latest MySQL

Latest PHP

This will be a small board, so my needs are not great. I just want to understand what I could expect out of the configurations above. If there is a difference between the values for 2.X and 3.X, please let me know each. Thanks so much for your assistance. :D

There are many other things that you would need to consider. Like it's connection to the internet for one.

All i can say is that all Celerons should be set on fire, no matter what it's freq speed is. Most servers that have celeron CPU's usually have cheap/rubbish motherboard as well. (Not always but it is very common.)

I started off with a Celeron server, it did not do very well at all and it only hosted a few average sites. It was a 1.3ghz box from www.ev1servers.net (http://www.ev1servers.net/).

I would go with the P4 if it is within your budget. (No matter how small your site is, celerons simply are not up to web hosting, or anything else for that matter)
Also; take a look at www.ServerMatrix.com (http://www.servermatrix.com/) :)
They are very good.

I also noticed that you said "small board". You may want to consider buying web hosting instead of a dedicated server. There is no point in paying out all that money if you don't need one.

P4 2.4GHZ with 1GB ram is much better option.. you should be good for 150-250 vB users online over 900second cookie time out (just a estimate based on vB by itself on the server) no idea as to Hivemail's resource consumption
