Help me understand the concept of, causes of, and fixes for dbase corruption.

I've read a couple of posts by people on this BB about database corruption, but I still don't really understand it. I mean, does it just happen? Are there things I can do to prevent it or is it just something every BB admin has to deal with?

Why does it happen? That's difficult to say. I have a pretty large forum with decent activity and have never once had index corruption. However, on extremely high activity boards it will happen. Or it can happen when you have hardware problems or if there is a MySQL bug that may sometime cause it.
