Do smilies substitute for periods ?

So is it:

John is ugly :)
or

John is ugly :).

?

no offense to people named John.

I usually say blah blah ^_^

I rarely say blah blah. ^_^ because the smiley goes with the statement, and a period is an ending.

Blah blah ^_^. is just weird :p

Some weird topics tonight :D

I think I use the first method most often.

I usually just type my sentence, and put a smilie after the period, like this. :D If I have to type another sentence, I just start typing. If people have a problem with that, then they can use the "mad" smilie on me and put it before the sentence, or as the period, then call me all kinds of names. :D

...They only do that because they're super cool, though.

Im just asking because I was wondering lol, Im getting into having proper punctuation and not speaking in slang. In school I will only talk in slang with close friends or if im mad lol ;).

No, they certainly do not substitute for periods. At least in my book :D.
