My only problem with the style is the header. I like the drop down menu's, but it all reminds me of XMB. The tiny folder icons just don't seem to fit with the rest of the design, IMO.

It wasn't with vB2, so I'm guessing no...
Haven't upgraded my site as I am closing the forums on it soon, so there would be no point - I will be installing Gamma in a few days after my site closes, just to play about for a bit...
Then I'm gonna use my licence for a new site, where I will fresh install either Gamma, RC1 or whatever other version is latest at the time...
After much browsing last night (when vB.com wasn't dying every other page  ), I have finally decided that I like the new Grey style, but the White one doesn't look right IMO...
There are a few things I don't like about it though:
User's names underneath thread titles in forumdisplay and underneath private messages in the Inbox - Could we have an option to, like before, display it in a column on forumdisplay / PM Inbox?
The Postbit buttons (homepage etc) - As NTLDR said to me last night, while we were waiting for teh Gamma to be released, there is no information or notification that we, as users, must click the "Online"/"Offline" image by the user's name to get the cool javascript box - Perhaps using a different button, or an alt which actually mentions "User Info Box" or something?
Browsing threads - No "New Thread" button? I miss this feature, and for lazy people like myself, who get weird ideas mid-reading another post, to go back to the forum to post a new thread is an extra unnecessary click :(
The UserCP - We can change the postbit to vaguely how it was - Shouldn't we be able to change the UserCP Navigation back to the way it was? :)
Finally - The contract/expand buttons - These could present a problem to users with custom styles, yet there is no option to turn them off - Surely we should be able to decide if we want them on or not? :)
Other than that, I like what you have done with the Calendar (at least it doesn't look so odd), and the Javascript boxes that appear are wicked :)
Overall, a good job done, but some improvements needed, some which others will agree with, some which I doubt many care about :p

I generally like the gamma, BUT ... :( I think the use of ActiveX to implement 'active table cells' for IE users is a great step backwards. I (and, I believe, many of our customers) have IE set to prompt re allowing ActiveX scripts to run. This makes using a VB board most inconvenient to use - prompts appeara for *every* page. I know it will scare some of users away ... for instance, how can we convince our users that there are no malicious ActiveX controls on threads that have been posted by other users?
Is there a way to turn off these ActiveX controld?

I normally have pages 100% so they fit the entire screen where do I change this if that is possible. thanks
Anyhow great, I like it very much.
Extra Styles
The 'vBulletin 3 Grey' and 'vBulletin Classic' styles available at vBulletin.com can be downloaded from here. (See the end of this post).
In order to make 'Liquid' (expanding width) versions of these styles, you will need to edit the Stylevars for each style and make the following changes:
Main Table Width: 100%
Form Width: auto
User Control Panel Form Width: auto
do it through admincp -> styles and templates -> style manager -> then in the pull down menu will be stylevars.
check out Kiers original thread in the annoucements for the links to the liquid styles. at the bottom of the board you can pull down and select the liquid styles, which are full screen. :)

I was wondering why they don't have the default settings set so that the page fills completely without the large columns on each side? Why should everybody have to go change settings for this when it should be this way after installation? Does this only happen to people running high resolution? I am using 1024 x 768.
sabret00the

Rocky is it such a hardship to change 3 things in the stylevars? No Poolking, it isn't a hardship. But why isn't it set by default this way?
Usually software is developed to install the way people want it to look. You shouldn't have to go change the settings to get things to look the correct way.
Seems like those changes should have been implemented into the installation.
Seems that the minority group of 800 x 600 users should be the ones that have to go make these changes, not the majority of us who use higher resolution.

<phrase>Counters</phrase>
I didn't find [Counters] in vbulletin-language.xml
Best regards
DO NOT EDIT THE XML FILES FOR EITHER THE STYLE OR LANGUAGE
If you edit the defaul XML file you will have to translate vBulletin with every release. The XML file is simply a way for us to transport the language settings to you easily. You need to make the translations within the Admin Control Panel in order for vBulletin to be capable of multiple languages and so that you do not have to translate it every time.
If you cannot find a phrase please create a bug report in the bug tracker. This is not a support thread.

Exciting announcement to wake up to. However the active x menus are kinda a dissapointment. Many people have that set to either prompt or deny. I don't really care much for this style, but the soft blues are real nice ^^ Looks a bit messy to me and alot of white space (I don't mean the sides) though this is all just personal opinion.
At any rate thanks for the new release ^^

Fri 5th Dec '03, 12:18pm
Maybe they could implement an extra step in the installation/upgrade process that asks you what resolution you use. Then, the program could adjust itself accordingly during setup.
Or maybe that could be in user options. Each user could set the resolution they want to view the forum with.
Wayne Luke
Fri 5th Dec '03, 12:25pm
There are instructions how to make the style Liquid in the Release Announcement as long as a ZIP package with the other two styles available here.
If you look at the bottom of every page, there is a style chooser where you can easily switch between fixed and liquid (which change to fit your resolution) styles.

Is it just me or is there *ALOT* of bugs in the gamma?
The black line between posts disapear, postbits get completly black, texts get backgroundcolor, etc?
This happens to me and the other moderatorers that are testing the forum.
(I have rebuilt styles, and reverted all to the new ones)

Fri 5th Dec '03, 12:28pm
How does this new style hold up with older browsers?
The new style is fully functional in older browsers like Netscape 4.X and IE 4.X. It also works in text based browsers such as Lynx. The style has been extensively tested in many browsers and on multiple platforms so that it takes advantage of features present in modern browsers and yet degrades peacefully when needed.

This happens to me and the other moderatorers that are testing the forum.

It looks like you are missing some color assignments in the CSS. Have you made sure all your colors were set properly and added in colors for the new classes that were added?
If you need further help, you really should start a thread in troubleshooting. This isn't really a support thread and your problem will just be overwhelmed.

I was also wondering why they don't have the default settings set so that the page fills completely without the large columns on each side? Why should everybody have to go change settings for this when it should be this way after installation? Does this only happen to people running high resolution? I am using 1024 x 768.
I, too, am using 1024x768, and I like the fixed style better... IMO the messages are more readable when the line length is shorter. I tried using the liquid style and immediately switched back to the fixed style. Nice to give users the option to pick their preference.

Any way to make it user selectable between vertical and horizontal post-bits?
my guess is this would be pretty easy to do... the only thing that changes is the template used for the postbit, where you can set it to use postbit_legacy instead of postbit... so you can simply create a new style, and simply have the content of postbit legacy copied into postbit, and allow users to select this style rather than the default style... I guess this would work correctly:cool:

Nice to give users the option to pick their preference. :cool:The problem I see with the fixed style, is when using long thread names you will end up having 2 or more lines instead of 1 nice line. Same with the forum descriptions. They can take more than one line even with liquid style, but you almost double the amount of lines with fixed. I just don't see the point of wasting that space with those wide columns on each side.
I don't mind the fixed style when actually in the forums and reading them. It is the main page that seems to be affected adversely in my opinion.

Speaking of license numbers, are the servers in the process of moving at the moment? I tried to grab Gamma on one of the licenses I have access to and nothing whatsoever is appearing for the site/license info/download links in the members area, yet my expired one shows up just fine...
Upon further inspection, it seems that there's a few broken links in the page itself as mousing over normal text highlights it and bolds it as if it were a link...

I was going to ask a question about that posting rules and whether we could have that little thing (that closes the section) set off as default, ie so they have to click on it to open it up - rather than click it to close that would hide all that white space to it's right - does that make sense? Not sure if that is possible - obviously if it is, it would make it more compact most of the time to most users.
I do like this new version - after replacing the VB logo with my own it was so easy to add a bit of code to get ride of the margin space - and as was said in an "alt" tag somewhere, saves novice users like myself ballsing up important code.

There are instructions how to make the style Liquid in the Release Announcement as long as a ZIP package with the other two styles available here.
If you look at the bottom of every page, there is a style chooser where you can easily switch between fixed and liquid (which change to fit your resolution) styles.
Why was the default style set to a fixed width? I really do not see a point to that. If you run a high res, Im sure you dont run at full screen. Another thing, why cant the classic style have the have the liquid option without having to edit stuff?

two quick questions. i'm a ltitle stuck on the last two options in the config.php3 file;
// Prefix that your vBulletin tables have in the database.
// For example: $tableprefix = 'vb3_';
$tableprefix = '';
and
// Prefix that all vBulletin cookies will have
// For example
$cookieprefix = 'bb';
I don't really know... :( what's the standard, if i'm not changing anything etc.
And one more thing. When it says to delete all VB2 files. does this mean basically deleting my whole "forum" directory?
I'm upgrading from 2.3.3 btw.
thanks

it depends if you selected a tableprefix for your original install i think
I've just finished my upgrade to gamma (no big errors, woohoo :D)

BTW, is it possible to download the all the buttons/images for the "classic" vb3 gamma style ?
the ones in the zip are kinda blue, would like to have all the purple ones like they are here on the "classic" style
Scott MacVicar
Sat 6th Dec '03, 11:01pm
I'll see about getting the purple images zipped up for you and posted soon.
The cookieprefix detaults to bb if empty which was the standard in vB2. Its there as a fix for people who change there cookie path and users start having problems logging out as they dont have permission to change the cookie that was originally set.
So changing the cookieprefix will stop the broken cookies being used.

Okay I got a test forum setup and I'm half happy with the gamma release, there is a lot of space being wasted and where are all the postbit buttons like send PM to a user or searching for posts by this user, send email etc at the bottom of peoples posts, at least lets have the option of having them back in posts? I've tried to search for an answer on this but nothing conclusive either that i've just clearly missed it. I know there is a popup menu when you click on the on and off gif in the postbit info, I can see it exists on this forum but when I hover over someones on/off image on our test forum nothing happens, I've looked in the admin options, I cannot see anything regarding this.
What happened to prefix for closed threads? I noticed it didn't actually work in the beta 7 version, even though I filled in the values for that option.
Sorry if it seems im having a moan when the vB guys have been working flat out to get this version launched and that is certainly appreciated. :)

In order to make 'Liquid' (expanding width) versions of these styles, you will need to edit the Stylevars for each style and make the following changes:
Main Table Width: 100%
Form Width: auto
User Control Panel Form Width: auto

It comes with the grey style.
The others are available for download, if you looked at the main vB announcement thread.
I downloaded the extra styles mentioned on the announcement thread. But I dont get the White Liquid or the Grey liquid on my board. Any idea where I can get it?

Looking good. I like the blue - it is pretty much the exact colour of my existing vB2 forums! It is going to look like I couldn't bother changing the colours if I leave them that way.
I do like the changes - can't wait for the final release.

Hey,
I was wondering if I could install it for like a day, to have the feel of it, then uninstall it the next day. I'd have it besides my other forums, but I'd just be messing with it, and I'd be the only member. You can check on the activity if you wish, it's sort of a "test" vbulletin.
Is it alright, or will I have to terminate?
Thanks.

You are allowed to install a test forum for this purpose. Just place it in a directory named 'testvb' and make sure it's not publicly accessible.

Hi Steve,
If I do this on my Forums, will it read the old database from 2.3.3?
I want my moderators to poke araound and check out the new control panel.
Thanks

You will need to backup the db, then restore it as a new db. You can then upload the vB3 files and run upgrade.php.

Thanks for the quick answer Steve.
Can I ask you a backup question here?
Or does it have to be in MySQL area?
thanks again.

I don't understand the question. I suggest you start a new thread about this.

OK, I'll put it in MySQL topic section then.

Hi CreedFeed,
I used to get those complaints all the time.
InternetExplorer is more forgiving than Netscape.
I think it has something to do with the way Netscape handles nested tables.
I could be wrong.
This has always been one of my pet peeves with MS, Netscape and AOL.
There compatibilty sucks in plain English.
Maybe I'm off base here. But I think it's the way Netscape handles HTML.

Discuss away! :)
If you are having a specific problem, please post in the appropriate forum rather than using this thread. If you believe that your problem is the result of a bug, please use the vBulletin 3 bug tracker (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs.php?). siick.

doesn't work too well in netscape 4.7netscrap is free just like IE....why are you still using an old version?
Updates to things are done for good reasons....problems are the main reason for product upgrades....netscape (the newest version) is pretty good with the tables even though it still isn't as forgiving as the FREE Internet Explorer

I don't use Netscape at all for browsing the web. I have it installed as I use it to test web sites I design. You have to remember that not everyone out there is tech-savvy and they may still be using Netscape 4 or other older browser.

Well.. I sincerely hated NS7. It was way too bloated and laggy -_- I never touched Netscape again after that :p
Anywho, since vB3 final is supposed to be released by X-mas, I wonder when the next release is coming out o.o
