I am the admin for a pretty large forum (around 19000 members) and 3 of my supermods are driving me nuts by fighting with each other.

They all are trying to be holier than thou.. they think they are doing a better job than the other so they are all having a brawl in the private moderator board.

I have told them that they are all doing everything the board needs them to do.. but they still don't shut up.

I would de-supermod them all even temporarily but I can't risk losing them because they really are doing a good job in the areas I need them in. Actually its more like 2 on 1 .. its a major major mess. Now the little mods have picked their favorite supermods and they are attacking the other supermods..

What would you do?

I've never run into this problem, but if I did I would let them all know what I expected from them and if they disobeyed, I'd get rid of them.

ok.. I posted:

I'm sure the supermods know their responsibilities and expectations. If you need me to repeat them let me know.

What is NOT needed is exactly what is going on in this board. If you stick to the responsibilities this won't happen.

We are all very sick of this and who ever shows any hostilities and fighting or whatever will be removed. Now I don't need you to point figures or hunt down other mods or whatever.. I'll be monitoring people.

Last I checked we are all capable of being rational persons who can intelligently solve problems. I need you to find that rationality in yourselves and bring it out. If you can't.. as I said before you will be removed since being rational is a supermoderator responsibility.

Thank you.

sounds good? :D

Good, but I would have provided more specific examples of what is not allowed.

One of the things that I've found over the years that helps with mods and their pecking order, I have some groundrules and mod philosophy in my mod handbook about dealing with each other when there are disagreements (and pulling rank isn't a display of good mod).

Then I take it one step further, I don't allow my mod forum to be a place where they discuss members in an unkind way nor where they demean each other. We do discuss problematic members in the mod forum but only as we discuss their behavior and brainstorm handling specific things. We never use the mod forum for character assassination of a problem member...even though the member will never see it. I consider the mod forum as a professional discussion spot....and expect my mods to behave this way as well.

Making sure the mod forum is a place that is business only...means that any disagreements between mods won't break out in an out and out riot.

Are they debating over decisions? Or, are they debating over who's in charge of certain aspects of the forum?

Well, at my private forums, we have over 70 mods now - I run it with 7 staff teams, 10 members each, with a hierarchy of senior and junior staff with different levels. Basically, I have a senior staff team, where all the leaders answer to my 2nd in command. Whenever we have staff disputes, and these are rare, she makes the final decision. If the staff don't listen, we ask them to step down.

Unless you are trying to have a vote- with an odd number of people, if everyone votes (wich they should if it is a policy decison and they are mods) then an odd number will never get you a tie vote.
