View Full Version : Vote for your favorite board in vB Board of the Month - September

Hi all,

Last month was not a good one for us. I hope this month is better and more sportsmanlike. As always, please try and keep all your comments positive in nature. If you don't have something good to say then don't say it or say it per PM. This thread is not for whiners, complainers or poor sports, it's for constructive criticism, recommendations or warm fuzzies. We want to compliment the hard work of the board owners and admins and show respect for what they have accomplished. We do not want to infer that they are cheating or show disrespect. OK! That being said, I hope we can get off on the right foot this month.

Again. Please look at all boards before you vote and may the best board win.

I like bmiforums.com (http://www.bmiforums.com/). I like the postbit alot. None of the subjects on any of the nominees interest me except the music one, so I just had to go by looks.

BMI reminds me too much of the FFRepublic style, and seems to have a very similar community.

Hotscripts hurt my eyes, and while the other two were very nice, I liked Wominx even better. It just has that sleek, cool style and feel to it. Got my vote :)

No doubt about this one... wominx gets my vote!!..

Hotscripts was nice as well, the others seemed to "default" to me, nothing extra.

Not an easy choice between wominx and BMI, however...

My vote this month goes to wominx.

Really nice work done there, I really enjoyed the visit.

In the past when a nominee' page was down, or resulted in a 404, s.molinari gave them x days to fix it, so IMO, the same should have applied here with ArtOrg.

The x days was only after the announcement of the nominees not after the poll started. If your server is down for the start of the poll then unfortunately your o.o.l.

Just a little comment here, being as you did not state that in your rules, then the site that was excluded from the poll, should be allowed back in.

You shouldn't exclude a site just because you realise you've left a rule out.

Rules are there for a reason and you should not add them once a poll has got underway and exclude a site because you added them.

If you don't want bitching and complaining in these threads, then think about your guidelines more carefully in future.

So this isn't really the way to go about "starting off on the right foot" is it?

http://www.radiomute.com/

Nice design. Simple, but nicely made. I dont like the alignment though. At 1600x1200 maximized, there are large grey borders on both sides of forumhome. Same with Firebird. I dont know if thats done on purpose, but whatever, it is a nice site but the alignment and the grey border expansion issue is slightly annoying. If it was centered that would be a big plus for me, I just think its easier to read and follow.

http://www.bmiforums.com/

I'm not a real big fan on dark themes, but it is pretty good all things considered. The postbit is pretty cool, a bit too graphics heavy for my taste, but original. However I really dislike fixed backrounds, makes scrolling very sluggish in both IE and Firebird.

http://www.graphic-forums.com/

Great layout. Simple, easy on the eyes, great color, graphic use etc. Again, I can only stand center aligned layouts. The width doesnt bother me much, though with a forum dedicated to the graphic arts I would think more ppl would be using at least 1024x768 and above. I realize there other themes to choose, but I'm not voting on those, I'm looking at the default theme. If it was wider, and centered that would be damn near perfect for me.

http://www.wominx.net/forums/

Graphically speaking its very impressive. Personally I prefer simple, easy on the eyes/non-flashy layouts like graphic-forums or my own, but from a purely asthetic point of view Wominx is nicely done. The header specifically.

http://forums.hotscripts.com/

Ah yes, good ole hotscripts. Great resource, but personally I liked the old design better. While the new one is hipper than the old, I really dont like the color Red, especially bright, vivid red. Its too much of a contrast from red and white. Postbit for example, while its very nice, the bright red really distracts me and my eyes get tired pretty soon. Its an otherwise nice layout (though I think the header could be better), the colors for me are holding it back. If it had to be red, it would have to be drastically towned down in a more neutral/earth tone for me to really stand it.

------

In the end, there were only really 2 contenders for me, Radiomute and Graphic Forums. RM has been very slow loading for me, sometimes not loading at all, but even so, while its very close I just have to go with Graphic Forums for me (default layout). Clean, easier on the eyes than RM, and I can tolerate the alignment better than RMs. RM however was a very very close 2nd, and its an extremely nice design.

So this isn't really the way to go about "starting off on the right foot" is it?Hi poolking,

I realise this decision isn't backed by any rule. It is my decision. I also didn't exlcude them cause I left this rule out. This contest needs boards that are running and at the time the poll was made Artorg was down for sometime and I didn't have enough time to ask when Artorg was going to be up again so I made the quick decision realising that the Artorg people wouldn't like it.

Also think about the fact that artorg didn't come online again until 3 days after the poll started. Most of the votes you see were made in those three days which means they would have missed out on a lot of votes inevitably killing their chances to win.

We are learning by doing so such a rule couldn't have been made since this situation never happened before. There will, however, be a rule for next month's nomination guide lines. So I hope Artorg can see their shortcoming not as a "trajedy" but as something positive in that their situation has improved vB BotM. They will also be able to join in for next month's nominations.

On another note. Next month's poll will only be open for votes from members who registered 30 days prior to the start of the poll. This will not be checked in the voting (i.e. showthread.php and poll.php haven't been altered) but rather at the end of the month. Kier scrambled up a small script so I can see who is voting and for whom. We will respectfully ask member's to obide and I will give updates as to the voting results as the month goes on. I hope this will stop future "problems" like we've had in the past.

As I said we are always trying to improve.

Scott

Seeing how HotScripts is a skin from vbskins.com, I won't be voting for that one...

I like WominX and BMI Forums a lot, it's hard to choose, but I think I'll go with BMI. I prefer darker color schemes, and like the postbit/getinfo templates. :)

I never thought I'd see the day a skin sold at vbskins.com was up for vB of the Month. =/

All nice work, and I never looking at the sites displayed find it easy to pick just one, but hotscripts gets the vote.

The whole design is clear, quick to load etc, color scheme perhaps I wouldn't like so much on my site, but that is just personal choice, it works well enough and it looks crisp and clean, easy on the eye. The only thing I really didn't like was seeing the banner at the top as it just looks like it's sitting on top of everthing and for me kinda spoils it slightly, but with that said it was still my favourite, Nice one! Kudos to the designers of all 5 sites.

Maybe an interesting thing to add to the rules and the like for these contests, is that if a board is down on the day that the new poll is to go up, and it's still down at the end of the day when the poll REALLY has to go up, that board automatically gets placed in next months contest? or at least is instantly nominated + seconded, in order to be in the drawings hat...

sounds reasonable, no? cos usually, a board itself is not at fault for the server going down, so this would compensate their loss...

That makes sense to me...My boards went down because of server issues, if not I'd have gotten nominated for October...And they're still down...
