Would 1 x 40GB IDE (I presume) HDD be alright for a server with ~50 concurrent users (on all sites, i.e. no more than 50 users online on the whole server)?

depends on the rest of the server hardware.. i.e. don't expect too much if you plan a celery 400a with 128mb and 40GB IDE drive heh (it will still handle 10-30 users no room for growth)

P4 1.7Ghz - 512mb RAM is what I'm getting :)

there are lots of tutorials available inthe howto sections.

I use Bastille-firewall personally.
