RackShack - Great servers for little $:)
Be prepared to upgrade stuff yourself, or pay someone to do it for you;)

Right now we're using a Dual 1ghz p3, 1gb ram.
We recently got a Dual 2ghz Xeon w/ 1gb ram from rackshack though :D

Ahhhhhh! Stop showing off about your dual xeon :p it's not funny anymore :(.
If you've never had a dedicated server before and know minimal linux, go with a managed dedicated server provider. There are many out there and 99% of them suck, i'll put it that blatantly. DO NOT go with nocster (nocster.com) as their network is lame (i've had experience), basically, if you don't know much linux at all and don't have hours to spend learning how to do things, go with a managed dedicated server provider which will cost you around $300 - $600 a month. Fun isn't it.
If you do know some linux, go with rackshack.net. Good prices, good network, don't expect support, and if anything goes wrong, they will happily reformat your hard drive straight away, even if it's a minor problem, so it's risky but you're supposed to know what you're doing.

Rackshack is extremely cheap.. Thats why I'm looking towards them. Will they transport and keep the server on a rack... or is that my job?

Maybe it's time to put it in the sig? ;)

That said, I might actually be able to use all the processing power in it, as I'm working on a couple of nice projects ;)

You rent out servers they already have there.

Ahhhhh no!!! You put it in your sig, meanie :p, all I need to do is get a Dual Xeon 3.06GHz w/ Hyperthreading on a OC256 port all to myself, then who'll be laughing :p

Well you needn't know too much linux. I only knew some basic commands when I first got my server at Rackshack, but that was with cPanel which makes life a lot easier. You'll need to know a little more if you get Ensim Pro. If you get Plesk, well...you shouldn't, it's bad lol. As for plain redhat, well, a lot of linux knowledge is required :).

Oh, I have hyperthreading enabled allright :P
That said, I wouldn't mind the OC256, as long as someone else pays for it ;)

I would say the most important thing is to get the server secured when you buy it.
If you have friends who know a lot about linux, ask them if they can help you secure it.
Once it's secure(ish), just play around with it :)

Yeah, I was looking to get Cpanel. My users will basically be paying the hosting bill, because with the amount of money Adsense has been producing.. I could get 2 dedicated servers. :P (I'll only take 1 for now..) Plus, I'll have my own money if need be. Thanks for the advice, and I'm definitly looking into Rackshack. Rackshack is the cheapest I've found so far.. for what they offer for say 146.95/month, others will charge 300/month. But, rackshack will only offer a OC-48 connection as the max. connection, right?

You'll be switched at 100mbps.
I haven't had any problems maxing that out :P

The first dedicated server I had was an unmanaged one from FocalHosting.com - only about 50GB transfer or so (which is why I ended up moving as my site grew), but I knew NOTHING about linux when I got it. However Alex there took time out to show me around my server, have advice one what I needed to do etc, and was basically the best host I've had.
So, if you want some help but don't want to pay out for a managed or semi-managed server, go with them.
I'm now with Neutelligent... Their support response has been between average and abysmal (sometimes taking 2 days to even acknowledge a ticket - not just reply to it, but log it into their system!). But they're cheapish.
Do Rackshack do SCSI servers?

Fri 22nd Aug '03, 11:42am
Well, I found this at my current host, RSMHost:
Dual Xeon 2.4GHz
1GB DDR ECC Registered RAM
1 x 73GB SCSI 10,000RPM Hard Disk
1 x 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Disk
2000GB Monthly Bandwidth (1000GB in and 1000GB out)
APC Remote Reboot Port Included!
5 IP's Included (With Justification)
cPanel/WHM Included!
334.95 Monthly
I might take that, as it is managed.

In most aspects, rackshack is not that great. Especially, as you said, in support. I had them for abobut a week or 2 and was really unhappy with the speed and service. I went with Simpli.biz, got a shared plan for a while, then upgraded to a custom dedicated server (not the RaQs they advertise) and am really happy. Although the RaQs themselves are not bad either.

Well, I supposed I should stick where I am. I'm with RSMHost.. and I have a shared plan now. I'm happier than I ever was with a host.. and now that I realize they offer great prices on dedicated hosting, I must take them. Rackshack seems good.. but as it was described to me by someone.. They deliver the server, and thats it. From there, your on your own.. other than reboots. So, I will stick with RSMHost on this one.. Great support, and obviously a great plan.

You are pretty much on your own. If you want an upgrade or something they have to install, good luck if you need it on a weekend or friday, you arent getting it until at least Monday/Tuesday.
If you do go dedicated, at least as a backup, get cPanel or Ensim or hsphere or some control panel (heck, webmin is free, but is kinda clunky) if you dont have too much knowledge in servers. Its saved my ass more than once.

Mine is going to be completely managed by RSMHost. :)

You're lucky you have the $$ to spend on something like that then bahawolf. You're spending close to $300 for it but in all honesty, with cPanel on the server, you won't need support often.
Come to think of it, I've never really needed 'support' as I didn't do anything that would result in me needing any support yet I was perfectly happy running 12 websites on a server.
So it's really up to you, if you have the $$, go with a managed host, if you don't, go with rackshack. All I can say is Rackshack give what they promise: No management, great network uptime, great network speeds, quality servers, hardware replacement, and any hardware/reformat related issues get answered within minutes in the ticket system.

Yeah, I agree with you 100%. If you KNOW that its going to be unmanaged.. then don't complain. But, I'd personally like a managed server if I can get around the same cost, if not better.. lol.

Try to find out a bit more about RSMhost's network first, make sure you're not going to be capped at 1mb/s on your port or something, you know, just bombard them with questions just to be sure...

Really, it's not hard at all..
If you follow the INSTALL file, it's as easy as 1-2-3.
If you need something more advanced, you just keep reading it :)

Where it gets tricky is if you install the Zend Optimiser or other things like MySQL Queer Catching;)

Looks like someone forgot to make clean first ;)
(and if you compile php statically into apache, you need to make clean both php and apache before you ./configure with your new options)

And is it all from affiliates and/or Google adsense?
Or is it that you have a good job? :p
