Ok, yesterday I plugged a microphone into the speaker jack of my laptop. It was plugged in for about 15 minutes until I noticed it's in the wrong place. And today I realized I can't hear anything from the laptop's speaker, even if I connect a headphone. Could this have messed anything up inside the laptop? And if it did... any way to fix it? :p

Thanks.

(By the way, there is a 70% chance that the microphone was broken and not functional, before the incident.)

i cant imagine that a micro could have messed anything... a micro is the same as a speaker, technical. of course, there are some differences, but your laptop should be fine. a friend of mine already used a speaker as a microphone, it worked fine :)

check windows volume settings for fixing that... do you hear something over the internal laptop speakers?

When I plug in the headphones I hear "nothing", but when I increase the volume the "nothing" sound gets louder. The volume settings in Windows are definitely right...

I also plugged the speakers in the wrong place and nothing went broken. But I guess this is a bit different.

This might not work, but something similar has happened to me before, try plugging it in the same place again, then remove it (repeat a couple times)

You're sure you're not plugging into the lineout?

This "nothing" sound you speak of, is it a barely audible hiss in the background?
If so it would suggest that your speakers are working and it might be a case of incorrect mixer levels.

Well I get that "nothing" sound or whatever, from my speakers even when my computer is off, but the speaker power is on, so that doesn't neceserilly mean that its receiving any kid of valid input from the computer.

Well, depending on how sensitive your speaker jack is, you could of moved a connector. If you look in most audio jacks, you will either see one or two peices of metal that are the connectors. Your microphone might of bent the connectors, so that they do not touch your connector.

BUT, this would not be the case if your speakers get a loud hiss when you up the volume. It is probably a missed setting or faulty driver.

Call support and complain :D :D

A microphone and a speaker are almost identical in makeup, so NO, that would not have screwed anything up. BUT, it may have forced your system to change settings, so check your sound settings and do a speaker/sound test after you RECONFIGURE your sound settings from scratch.

Well, good news, I shut the laptop down (I kind of forgot how to do that :p) for a few minutes and now it's working. :) Thanks for the advice guys.

Try plugging a speaker into a microphone jack... you get an instant giant microphone. :)
