Where is the best place to purchase this server?
Any suggestions on price and reliable company? i've seen some online companies offering this machine for "less" but I worry about their company reliability.
Thoughts? Help? thanks!
Also, any suggestions on RAM needed (I'm thinking atleast 2 gig) and any other add-ons on a dream machine?

Would you want a dedicated, or shared server?

I'm purchasing...for a dedicated server. I have another server that is dated and needs to be my backup file keeper. So I'm browsing for a new server for my sites. :D

Thanks for the info but I'm not looking for a hosting plan.
I'm looking for the best price, best company to *purchase* a server. I have a company I use now that I'm happy for co-locating my server. I'm just wanting another machine...to purchase and co-locate with my other one.
Sorry I wasn't clear about that. :D

www.qsol.com
www.acmemicro.com

I use a rackshack.net Dual Xeon which works well. But RS is unmanaged, so it depends on how good you are with server management. :)

Thanks!...I'm not shopping for a hosting plan or a co-location spot. I have that. :D So rackshack isn't an option.
i'm just looking for the hardware. I'll check out the links, George. Thanks!

Either you could build it yourself or try Dell (high quality systems)

As for building my own...I co-locate at catalog.com and not in my neighborhood. I just wanted to buy it and have it shipped there. :p
Thanks for ya'lls input.

Have you looked at Dell's PowerEdge servers (http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/segtopic_servers_pedge_rackmain.htm)?

We used a bunch of poweredge boxes at my former workplace.. pretty nice stuff, except the 2550 was heavy as <insert censor> ;)
Anyway.. Kathy: if you're looking into building your own, see if you can get ahold of some Tyan motherboards.. you should get away fairly cheap with that..
We had some 10 - 20 boxes with Tyan motherboards.. nice stuff :)

Ah, found it:...It's a dual 1.4GHz P-III Tualatin (5600 bogomips) 512 full L2 cache, with 3GB of RAM and RAID-5 3x36GB Seagate SCSI drives...also includes off-server tape backup as well.

Well first let's find out what kind of case you can use. Is your colocation space in racks or do you rent shelf space? If your are renting rackspace will both PC's co-habit the same rack? How are your backup PC and your primary PC going to connect to each other? Through the switch or through a direct NIC connection.
If you are using Rack-based PC's I recommend the DELL PowerEdge series. Specifically the PowerEdge 2650. It supports two Xeon Processors up to 3.2 Ghz and up to 12 gigabytes of RAM. It also has SCSI drive interface and 5 hot-swappable 1" drive bays giving you room for plenty of storage. It also supports RAID.
If you can use a tower, you can get a PowerEdge SC server from Dell and save a little money. The SC1600 has similar configuration options to the PowerEdge 2650.
I plan on building my next server and I will be using parts from www.pcclub.com because they are local and I can save a ton on shipping.

Oh yeash, I second Dell servers, they are great pieces of kit (once you have a good one). Dell are getting a slight reputation for their reliability, i.e. number of units shipped and returned for repair is getting higher. However the support is excellent as long as you take out the right package you will not get any happier than with Dell.
They have some agressive pricing methods, watch out for the deals. I picked up a Poweredge 2650 standard configuration (2.4 Xeon, 256mb ram, 36 gb scsi hard disk etc) with a free 42U rack cabinet, for £1499+ VAT. Absolute bargain. The cabinet I was looking to purchase anyway, and priced up at around £800 from other sources.
One thing to watch out for is the Dell bits, for another Dell server I purchased 2 x 36GB 15,000 RPM SCSI hotswap drives which were £199 each. Also on some machines the RAID enabler has to be purchased, which is another £100 for a chip and backup battery pack, so it can get pricey sometimes. Just check out the special offers and see if theres anything which catches your eye, for example Dell are doing:
Processor 1: 2.4 GHz as standard, upgrade to 3.06GHz for $199 (should be $499)
or
Processor 1: 2.4 GHz as standard, upgrade to 3.06 GHz 1MB cache for $499 (should be $799)
Second processor will cost you $999/1,299 though.

Mmm.. Dell rackmount-rails..
clip them to the cabinet, slide the rack unit on.. beautiful :)
much nicer than screwing the rackslides into the cabiner :P
