View Full Version : Ventures Online or Rackshack? [Dedicated Hosting]

I am currently hosted with Ventures online and I need to go dedicated.
I have never managed my own server, so I'm a little unsure of what would need doing. I assume there are plenty of how toos around?
Does anyone know what the difference between the support of these two hosts? I know RS are cheaper, but they do seem to have less support. But what will they support (can't find it on thier site).
I am willing to learn how to run a server, but as yet have no idea.
I do like VO and can just about afford a good server with them, but I can get a better spec at RS. My site runs up to 250 users, with RS I could get a server with 1GB ram, but only 512MB at VO. RS includes more bandwidth although I don't think I would come close to using the amount supplied by RS.
What is all this about Redhat 7.3 needing upgrading by the end of the year too? Would I be able to do this myself? My only experience with server type commends was moving host and relocating vBulletin.
What should it do? Please help

If you really have no clue how to manage a server, stick with VO. Rackshack is completely unmanaged. On the contrary, with VO you will be able to learn all the tasks with some hand holding by them.

If you don't have any idea about administrating a server, VO would be the best bet unless you feel like paying someone to do your RS server. I know for a fact you can get them for around $50/mo, and with a little effort you could get someone who'd be intrested in doing it in return for free hosting with a few hundred gig's or so, which may save you some money. Another possibility is getting a rackshack server and reselling some space to get enough money to hire out a company to admin it.

If you have doubts about admining a server, I suggest you go with managed hosting. They will basically help you with every step of the way. The best managed provider I know of is Rack Space (http://www.rackspace.com/index.php).
Or you could go with RackShack and hire someone to help you admin. Go have a search over at Web Hosting Talk and see if anyone will do it for cheap.

You're still not on dedicated with that site?
Go dedicated, make you you've got the RAM and P4. You want the 1Gig RAM either provider you choose. The only way to minimize costs in the long run is to figure out server admin though.
If you do decide to go RS, get the Plesk/RH9.0 setup if you're worried about the 7.3 end of support by RedHat.

Also, I wouldn't really worry about 1 gig of memory. I would get the server with 512MB, and if it runs sluggish, just upgrade to more memory. If it runs fine, then there is nothing to worry about.

I've used Cpanel for a virtual host, it works fine, but WHM (the server portion) of it is just so messy and confusing. And Cpanel has no sandboxing of users - not a problem if you don't share a server, but its just another flaw in the product.
Ensim 3.1 I've used both on a VPS and dedicated, and I decided there wasn't enough to warrant the switch to 3.5 Pro... Ensim is a mess with fixes/etc though especially if you have a customized server.
Plesk I have no experience with, but the new 6.0 release looks pretty interesting, Plesk users often have less to complain about too... so my next dedicated is gonna be a Plesk box.

Ensim has seemed to have wrapped up their mistakes. I help admin Ensim Pro 3.5 on 14 boxes, and there has been little to none trouble. Yes, there we're a few patches/fixes that were needed, but that is the case in most hosting platforms.
