I am surprised there are no fields in the user profile for my first name and last name! I can put it my name the signature of course, but for my layouts it'd be much better with separate fields in the database.
(I can hack vBulletin to add them myself "of course" but I'd think this is a quite commonly requested feature?)

Most people will not use a real first and last name (or even a first name) on community boards.
I wouldn't even want them to actually (for their protection)

True, but this requirement came up when I was asked to implement a forum, software for a companys internal employee community. vBulletin would be great even for more closed communities - and the intranet market is large...
(If implemented, first name and last name should not be required)

You can make custom user profile fields in version 2.0. You can add as many new fields as you want from the control panel. This should satisfy your needs.
