As VB2 is just round the corner I thought that I need to fine tune my server for it's release:

Server Spec:

Redhat: 6.2
Apache: 1.3.9
PHP: 4.0.2
Mysql: 3.23.32

P2 400 | 256meg RAM | 9 gig scsi

Expected Usuage:

Low: 25 concurrent users
Max: 200 concurrent users (Rare)
Average: 90-120 concurrent users

1m Page forumviews a month:

Configs:

PHPInfo: http://cpfc.org/info/info.php
my.conf: http://cpfc.org/info/my_conf.txt

Status: NB No VB yet

Mysql status: http://cpfc.org/info/status.txt
Mysql extended: http://cpfc.org/info/e_status.txt

Uptime: http://cpfc.org/info/uptime.txt

I know I have a little OTT with all the info but hopefully we will be able to squeeze every last bit of performace out of this sucker :)

Well, I recommend a number of things todo.

Upgrade to Apache 1.3.17
Upgrade to PHP 4.0.4
Install PHP with zLib support

zLib will be great and Help bring down your bandwidth, or even better, install mod_gzip to do the lot.

But the apache and php should be high on your list

I am sorry Dave but I think you may just be asking too much from your slower server! I am simply not sure that a 400MHZ server with 256MB of ram is going to handle your estimated average of 90-120 concurrent user!

Have you given 1.15 a stress testing on your server yet?

Well see what happens- I have another 256 meg of ram budgeted so if the box croaks I'll upgrade :)

hehe, that is good news! At least it is not a Celeron box, then there would be no upgrading! :p

Dave, your config seems a little light to me for an average of 90-120 concurrrent users.
I would not wait and immediatly upgrade the RAM to 512 before launching your vb site.

Thanks for the responses:

I don't have a problem upgrading to 512 meg of ram but I am a little concerned by the processor.

Is 512meg of Ram wasted on a P2 400 mhz?

Do I really need a processor upgrade too?

Can I survive with the p2 400 but with the extra ram?

The goal here is to AVOID at all cost swapping. Sure a 400 mhz processor might not optimize the use of the 512 RAM, but you'll go much faster and better with a lower processor / no swap than with a higher processor with swap because not enough RAM.

So first upgrade the ram, and if you can, upgrade the processor ( p3 733 or above would be cool).

Sharg:

I am slightly unsure what to do now:

I know that I can upgrade the RAM but not the processor.

What I don't want to do is upgrade the RAM then find that the processor can't cope and have to upgrade the entire server later :(

Well, I think RAM will help the CPU in your case (90-120 concurrent is important)..... but I would suggest you wait the opinion of other guys as I'm not an expert.

Hopefully Chris Shreiber will read this and answer. He is THE guy in this forum and can't go wrong with his advice.

I'd think at p2-400 would be fine.. although your server usage would be high.

512mb ram is megga important, with 256 you'll loose mysql within 20 minutes.

Concentrate on your ram.. then get a CPU hike.

MMM

It's looking like I have a straight choice:

P2 400 512 meg ram

or

P3 800 256 meg ram

Which would you take?
