Where can I change MAX_Connections?

my MySQL's MAX_Connections is 100 only.
I wrote a my.cnf file as EVA2000 said in /etc,but it seems nothing has be changed...

How can I do?
BTW,where can i find safe_mysqld?

What OS are you using?

Try searching for a my.cnf file...it looks to me like MySQL is not reading the right one.
