Ok, I had somebody come onto my site and spew a bunch of garbage on my board as a "guest" (I was allowing guests to post and reply). I've got an IP address for the user. Is there anyway to track information down about them or their ISP?

I'd start with Trace Route command.

Tracert [IP Address]

Where would I use that command?

Tracert on Windows based system - command prompt.
Traceroute on *nix - bash.

No, go to http://www.arin.net/whois and enter the IP number. It will give you information about who owns that IP block. Tracert won't give you anything useful.

Sam Spade or Net Demon is what you want!

Here is Sam Spade:

http://www.samspade.org/ssw/ <--- windows program
http://www.samspade.org/ <--- Homepage

I don't have a link to Net Demon, but Sam Spade is great! Download it and install it on any windows machine for a great lookup tool! ;)

Trace route will give you at least a name of a server, a router.

Your advice is much more valuable and thanks for the link. When I saw the name of my boss... :)
