What level is recommended and why in vB 2.3.0?

1.
Any higher, and you increase your server load with minimal additional compression.

well. I set it to 1 and I get ZERO increase in speed. so what't the point of having gzip options if that is the case?

You save bandwidth and people connecting from dial-up do notice a difference in speed.

Then your page was small enough to begin with. In any event, the bandwidth is the real difference and reason to use gzip.

Remember, not all servers implement GZip properly (it can be quite twitchy), so it might only register in the headers and yet not actually physically compress the data.
Sometimes it works on my server, other times a minor module is upgraded and it stops. It use to be much more stable, but not anymore.
Load a large page and then under MS IE (doesn't always work with other browsers) right-click and select propertise. The page should be between 3 and 12K, with the days of 40/100K pages being gone.
