View Full Version : [fixed] It's About My Last Date.....

I have noticed recently that now when someone votes in a poll ... the date and time of that vote shows up on my main Forums Homepage list (the list of all of my forums) as if it were the last date/time of a post in that forum.
I have always had my polls set to bump to the top when a new vote is made.
I recently upgraded to vBulletin 2.3.0.
With previous versions of vB the last poll date never showed as the last post in a forum on the main Forums lists page.
Is this a new option in vB 2.3.0? Where do I go to turn this option on.. and off?

That's been a part of vB2 since the beta days. Just edit this setting in vBulletion Options:
Update last post time

Ok, there appears to be something in the reply post that I just attempted on this thread that is causing a vBulletin "15 second" timed out error...
Would be happy to send a copy of the text of the post to the powers that be here if that would be helpful in finding out what the bug is in vB 3.0.0 that is causing it to react this way to the post.
I've looked it over and the post doesn't appear to have anything unusual going on, but I am able to post this reply but not the intended one without getting the error.
The error is
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 15 seconds exceeded in /www/beta.jelsoft.com/htdocs/forum/includes/functions.php on line 2769

Anyway, here's basically what I was trying to say in my reply,
Steve, that option says...
Update last post time:
Update the last post time for the thread (thus returning it to the top of a forum) when a vote is placed.
I have this set to yes (as I always have had it set). My polls have always returned to the top of the forumlist when a new vote is made, however, what is different now is that when the poll returns to the top of the particular forum list with the latest vote date/time, it ALSO is showing as the last post time on the mainhomepage (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php?) list of all forums.
This causes an unusual action when a user clicks on the http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/images/lastpost.gif last post arrow, in that he is taken NOT to the poll (which is the thread displaying the last post-time), but instead he is taken to whichever thread actually had the last post (not the last vote). In other words he may be taken to a thread where the last vote was days ago, even though the forum list shows a more recent date (if someone recently voted).
Is that's the way it's always been? My forums didn't operate that way in the past (previously my forums displayed the last post time - not last vote date) on the mainpage, and would take the user to the actual last post in the forum even if a poll vote was bumped above that last actual post).

Hmmm...I can't confirm that problem on my forums. Clicking on the 'last post' icon brings me to the last post in the poll thread.

Are you talking about your Optiboard forums Steve? I just voted in a poll there. This causes the mainpage of your forum to show the time that I voted in the poll that was bumped to the top of your forum as the last post time. BUT... the name of the user shown on your mainpage (as the last poster was the user who made the actual last post (in the thread below the poll thread.)
Clicking on the lastpost ARROW does indeed take me to the last post in the poll thread, but its not a good effect because the last post in the poll thread is at a much earlier time than is indicated on the mainpage of your forums. Hence, users clicking on the lastpost ARROW are taken to the last post in the poll thread based on the fact that the time of the poll vote is the most recent action in that forum EVEN IF THE POST THEY ARE TAKEN TO... is dated a year or two ago.... Also, the NAME of the poster displayed on the main homepage is the name of the poster who posted the last actual message in the thread BELOW the poll thread. So on the mainpage of the forums, the TIME displayed is the time of the vote on the poll, but the user displayed is the user on the thread below the poll vote thread, which is misleading 'cuz it makes it look like that user posted his message at the time when someone else voted in the poll.
 Kinda problematic, eh?
I will attempt to attach screenshots of what I mean by all of this (they say a picture is worth a thousand words...and geeze, looking back at my post above I'm surely near my thousand word limit... :D )

If you hover your cursor over the 3 attachments above, the names of the attachments are set descriptively so as to be able to tell what they are attempting to illustrate.
The 3 above are basically...
1 Your Mainpage display
.... showing a post time under general chat of "6:21 am supposedly by Ray Parent"
2 The thread area that clicking on the LASTPOST arrow takes you to
.... ie it takes you to a post made by at 8:39 pm by Robert Martellerao
3 Threadlist display showing that actually
.... the 6:21 am time is related to the time on the poll voting thread
and
.... The Ray Parent name (displayed on the mainpage as having posted at 6:21 am) actually made his post at 5:04 am in a different thread than the one you are taken to by the ARROW.

Yep, you're right. What can I say? :)
I'll move this to the Bugs forum for a Dev to check.

Hmmmm, one hint area for developers to look over closely:
 What about the vote for more than one selection in a poll option? Was that option always available in previous versions of vB? I ask because the poll date displays on my forums previously worked correctly with vB 2.3.0 and I have made no changes since the time displays stopped working correctly. However the one thing I notice is that there is now a user created poll running on my board that allows for the poll voter to use the MULTIPLE CHOICE option. This is the first poll that has run on my board with this option, so I'm just wondering if the time display problem is related in some way.

The multiple choice option was added to one of the vB 2.2.x versions. I don't remember which one.

Ok, then that would make it possibly the culprit at my board because when I upgraded I went from vBulletin 2.0.3 to vB 2.3.0. So before my upgrade users would not have had a multiple selection option in polls.
Also is there a way to turn the option that allows users to create multiple selection polls - off? :)

You'd have to modify the templates to remove that option.

One other question...
In the one multiple poll that was running on my site this line:
this poll allows multiple selections
Appears in the first post under the poll. Is this line generated by the vBulletin software when a multiple selection poll is created or is it simply something the user creating the poll has added to his post?

Thanks for the quick reply Steve, came in before my follow-up question above. :)

I should clarify that the http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/images/lastpost.gif (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=79255) button will still take you to the wrong thread in the following situation:
Make post in thread with a poll Make post in thread with no poll Vote in thread with a poll Click http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/images/lastpost.gif (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=79255) button on forumhome for forum containing the two threads. The display of who made the last post and at what time will remain correct on forumhome, but the http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/images/lastpost.gif (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=79255) button problem can not be fixed with the vBulletin 2 system.
vBulletin 3 is not affected by this problem.
