How much RAM do I need to run VB smoothly?

Right now, I have 64MB. i dont think thats enough. I cant even import members from my own BB.

Whats a good amount to have?

Is my inability to import memebrs from my old bb because I have insufficient memory?

Well 64mb is very little, so you may very well need more. What is it doing when you try and import posts?

I get the error message that the rest of the people here get. "An email has been.... " I read through the other posts in the server configuration forum and they pointed to a lack of memory as the cause of their problems.

James, how much RAM do I really need? I have a very busy board with 5000 registered memebers.

A very busy board is a pretty broad term, and the member count is not a very acurate gauge. How many posts a day do you have? How many page views on your forum?

I would have to say most likely you *should* be running a 256MB package for a good running board, but all depends on actual usage:)

About 1.2 million a month and growing. Dang, I need this software, but until I get mroe RAM, I cant use it.

You definitely need more RAM. Our site is generating roughly 1.5 million views a month, and we just upgraded to 256.

And you are actually running with the UBB? It should be dying as well:)

Really that is a huge forum for 64MB, and yes I would have to assume that you would want to upgrade before making any switch.

Yes! youre absolutely correct. I'm dying!! I need more RAM. Damn it, good thing RAM is quite cheap. How much did the upgrade cost you guys?

Well, we're using Interland (or Interflam depending on your take) so price is a little sketchy. It ended up being $150 for setup (ouch!) and $100 / month after that. That was to upgrade from 128.

We are currently getting a new host (digital nation) and wont have to worry about Interland and their upgrade pricing any further:)

Yeah, Interland can go to hell... ;)

For lets say 1.5 million pageviews a month, is 192 MB of RAM in month. Thats going to cost me an extra 80/month.

Is that all, I should move over to your host :D

That is really cheap from 64, for a dedicated server.

I meant, for every 64 MB is 40/month. I'll order 2 x 64 MB which will give me a grand total of 192 MB.

theprof,

Plan to stay ahead of the curve. If you're at 1million pageviews a month, plan to have the capacity for 2 million pageviews *today*. This will keep your forums / members happier with the performance in the long run.

shri! I didnt know youre here. Well, its good to have people like you around, that is if youre the same shri at the GetHigh forums.... If youre not, ignore this.

Well, so how much RAM do I need?

Yes Prof... same old Shri.

How much ram -- 128 should be enough. We're doing a million pageviews (about 17GB of data) last month on a 128MB PC over at Digital Nation. I am assuming you're on a linux box...

My memory stats are as follows ..

total used free shared buffers cached
127752 119676 8076 30692 6348 48492

Don't focus too much on the cost of RAM. I'd talk to the ISP you're with and basically show them options you have around the net which probably will give you better pricing. Most of the ISP's are NOT making any real money and if you've been with them for a while, they'll gladly give you a freebie upgrade or move you to another plan.

If I recall correctly you're in Singapore right? Take a look at iasiaworks.com if you want a more local solution at aggressive pricing.

(I'm digressing here...) There should be a good regional shake up of Asian ISP's ... will make things more affordable, closer to home.
