View Full Version : Questions about vBulletin...

In as much as my original questions were getting lost in a completely different thread, I'm taking the advice given and starting a new thread. Hopefully someone can provide some feedback. :D

I currently have a UBB-- version 5.45c. I had purchased the lease option which expires in about three months. Due to their price increase today though I'm not particularly interested in purchasing the license and feel I would rather migrate to vBulletin instead as I am quite impressed with its features (and price!).

I have a few questions though-- my board is probably comparatively small. I have about 400 members with about 8500 posts or so. I'd say the maximum number of simulataneous users is 25 to 30; normally it is around a dozen or so (and sometimes less).

Is it better to get 1.1.5 now and convert everything over and then upgrade to 2.0 (from UBB 5.45c) versus converting directly to 2.0 once released or does it really matter ? I don't think I'll be upgrading to UBB 6.0 given that I'm going to be migrating.

Is there expected to be an incease in price for vBulletin once 2.0 is released ?

Each of my forums (about a dozen) look completely different from one another (different backgrounds, headers, title graphics). Can that be done now with vBulletin or does it have to wait until the co-branding in 2.0 comes out ? From looking at the test control panel it looked to me like some of it could be done now but I'm not sure.

Any insight would be tremendous !

It dosent really matter when you upgrade, i would say upgrade now to 1.15 and get a feel for how vB works, however as you may know, v2 should be out within two weeks.

Jelsoft has not said if there going to increase there prices for v2, i hope they dont, and i really doubt that they will. You may want to play it safe and purchase your lisense now, as you do get a year of free upgrades.

You can make every forum a different style with 1.15, but its quite dificult, v2 will make this sooo much easyer with co-branding, so you may want to wait for version 2 to do that.

You might think about converting now. The 1.1.5 UBB Import Utility has been thoroughly tested and used hundreds of times.

The one for 2.0 has not had this type of extensive testing yet.

Yes I have to agree. It is probably a good messure to do now with the tested software! ;)

Is it possible to install it now, import everything from UBB, and then test it to make sure it works ok. And then re-import at a later date when I want to actually make the switch ? Or can you only import one time ?

Once 2.0 is released with 1.1.5 still be available in the download area or would that be gone ?

Thanks everyone !

1.1.5 will probably stick around, at least until 2.0 is considered "stable".

At the time of this posting, the 2.0's UBB import is basically untested and probably doesn't work. It's not something that's been concentrated on yet since it isn't an essential part to getting a private beta working. :) I'm sure we'll be working on it quite soon though.

Ed. do you plan on having a ubb6 -> vB2 conversion in the v2 release? :)
