and can i delete the install folder after the upgrade or is that needed :D
Kier
Fri 27th Jun '03, 8:15pm
There are now three control panel styles provided in the vBulletin 3 zip, each demonstrating a different way to tackle styling the control panel, the idea being that people who are interested see how easy it is to re-style the control panel and make their own styles, maybe even allowing other people to download them.

You should overwrite all the files except config.php.

Just wondering if we can get a quick recap on files and templates that were modified, deleted or added.
Also I am a little concerned about the new showthread URL; a lot of boards have posts with links to other threads (i.e. this has already been asked, look here). Will the old URL with threadid still function?
Thanks and again, great work!

Do all the files need to be uploaded to update from vB3 b3 to vB3 b4? Also what update script do you run? The read me only has how to do a fresh install or how to upgrade from vB 2.x. Noting on updating from a different version beta.

Just a small note - on Safari on Mac OSX you have to click on the actual table cell around the link in the adminCP to use them, clicking on the text doesn't load anything.
Not a problem - just a solution for people who are doing the "what the?" thing.

With vB3, you always run upgrade.php to upgrade regardless of what Beta you are on or whether you were on vBulletin 2.X before. The upgrade.php will determine what steps are needed for a full upgrade process to run properly.

yes, but if Jelsoft know that no one is impressed, they'll change it. If they think people ARE impressed then they wont. Makes logical sense to say full feelings

I wonder what the correct transfer mode (FTP) is for .js, HTC, css, and xml files is. I use Ascii for php, js etc. so whats the correct mode for all these files?

It is because of the new logout link on the far righthand side.
Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done except removing redundant text like "Admin Control Panel" or changing "Go to your forum's homepage" to something like "Launch Forums".
You can make these changes yourself by editing the phrases in the system.

For clickable smilies you have to put smilies into that category.
For the WYSIWYG editor:
Admin CP > Options > Message Posting Interface Options > Enable Standard & WYSIWYG Controls.
Then go to your User CP
Options > Use vBCode quick links on your message input screens? > Show Enhanced (WYSIWYG) Toolbar

Just curious as to whether or not there is a user guide available at all for V3 yet?. I have not upgraded yet but am getting ready to, I would just like to be able to "read" about the new features and processes before I get going on it. My BB system is pretty time sensitive and I dont have the luxury of having my own servers to do testing on. Just wondering if ther is documentation included in the download, or available that sort of "spells out the new features and changes" from 2.X.
Thanks in advance

I installed a test copy on my home computer and it all worked fine there. Could a php setting be causing the parse error (either that, or it's getting corrupted during upload, even though i tried two separate ftp clients)?

Get a better/bigger monitor..... The only people that still use 800x600 are older people or people that don't know how to make their res. bigger....
I have never seen a dumber statement in my lifetime.
800x600 is pretty much standard more most people right now. I use 1024x768 myself, but it is a rule of thumb not to make a website that is not viewable in a 800x600 resolution.
If all else fails, see what yahoo.com is doing.
Another rule of thumb: Whatever yahoo.com's minimum resolution supports is what you should use.

I think the author just ment that its a good idea to check out what Yahoo (or amazon for that matter) does as they will always code to the lowest denominator so fewer people will have gripes with it.
If they arent doing something fancy pants... its usually an indication that its not supported in the current range of browsers, or in this instance, many poeple would be confused or frustrated by a layout that scrolls horizontally.
I seriously doubt the final style would go larger than 800px wide. If it does... use a different style, make your own, or tell your users to upgrade from windows 3.1

Yes, it will be a problem. You need to use the files from each license on their domains. Otherwise you are violating the license agreement even if you did pay for 4 copies.

I've upgraded on my test forums, and I've had no problems. Since I'm newish still to vB2, I dreaded vb3. The only difficulty I'm having with vB3 is all the options and deciding which to use :D
apart from that, its finding everything that I consider a mini hurdle as I'm used to the way of vB2.
I'm thrilled with it as it makes life so much easier for me because I dont have to mess around with hacks - and being new to vB and php its not wise for me to do so :D
I think it was worth the wait - even though its still in Beta.
I cant wait to release my mods to their control panel to get the hang of things :)

Poor assumptions made based upon what? I'd say that is a pretty accurate assumption based on the fact that a quick glance through the forums here shows that the # of bugs reported on Beta 4 are quite a bit less than the # reported on Beta 3.
At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jelsoft's developers don't damn near ace the thing with Beta 5 or at the very least RC1. My gut instinct tells me that the software will probably go "gold" by September based on what we have seen thus far.

That's easy for you to say to just downgrade... I wish It were that easy for me to do. But I don't have that kind of control of the host, and suspect few people do... maybe I'm wrong. I've spent hours trying to make heads or tails of the fixes that were listed, but ended up with nothing but frustration... So I figured that I'd ride it out, appoint a couple more admins, and use the bandaid solution of repairing the database every time it happened, hoping that VB3 would come to my rescue, compatible with MySQL 4.0.12 (which is what my database is).
So will it be compatible? Or am I waiting in vain?

Believe me... I share the sigh...
Yeah, I've tried tackling that thread a couple of times... I don't know that I have the right tools to progress along that thread... I use phpMyAdmin, and the instructions don't seem to be geared in that direction... Maybe I'm just not getting it...
After fruitless hours of beating my head against my keyboard trying to make heads or tails of it all, I figured it was just easier to do the quick fix manual repair and pray that maybe VB3 would be my saviour...
I'll probably try again after the break... Something that might be helpful is to know what tools we should be using to follow those instructions... I have phpMyAdmin, and wouldn't even begin to know where to start outside of it...
Have a happy fourth...

Actually I have messages on the IB and phpBB forums of the exact same MySQL problem swith those forums. From what I can gather one factor may be how busy your forums are.
I run three vB forums all with MySQL 4.0.12 asnd I have never had this problem. In fact many vB customers are not having this problem at all. The difficulty is trying to find out what is different about the customers that do have the problem.
One possible difference in my case is that I run this as a cron job every night:
mysqlcheck -A --auto-repair
It may be that running mysqlcheck repairs whatever is in the database that is causing the conflict with MySQL 4.0.12. FWIW mysqlcheck has never found a bad table on any of my databases.

The deal is that PHP ships with client libraries for MySQL 3.23.XX. These libraries are not compatible with MySQL 4.0.12 and higher. This incompatibility is what causes the errors. The reason that the errors appear on your vBulletin is because we are using more complex queries that take advantage of the speed features of MySQL.
In order to fix this, you simply need to recompile PHP to take advantage of the client libraries for MySQL 4.0.12 and higher. If you have cPanel and Webhost Manager on your server, running the script to rebuild Apache and PHP fixes these errors. It is called "easyapache".
I also used to have the errors on my server in many applications, not just PHP. However once I ran that script two months ago, I haven't had a single error. And while the issue is not related to PHP it does fix it properly and completely.
Erwin
Fri 4th Jul '03, 12:41am
The easyapache script can be run by typing this command in SSH:
/scripts/easyapache
Then choose option 5 for an easy default recompile of Apache and PHP, or option 6 to choose the PHP modules you want like GD and IMAP.

well i don't get it ?? if people that are running Mysql 4.0.1 or wateva don't get problems and the people running the same are getting problems it possibly could be 1. You have installed Hacks that has Writen to the Database 2. Your host has a Glitched Mysql thingy
Wayne Luke
Fri 4th Jul '03, 11:12am
It is Number 2. The problem is caused by only upgrading part of the total solution. When you upgrade MySQL to 4.0.12, you need to upgrade PHP as well to accomodate the new MySQL. Hosting companies aren't doing that and therefore the corruption is caused.
In my opinion, it has been months since this started occuring and any legitimate hosting company that cares about their image and custom service would have acknowledged and fixed the problem on their end. The fix has been posted numerous times around the Internet including on the MySQL, PHP and other sites.

One way around it is to threaten to leave your host, this may sound mean but in most cases it will grab their attention UNLESS they are a HUGE company.
There are many other hosts out there who take these issues into account and will resolve them for your satisfaction, i suggest if you have this problem then try looking elsewhere. :)

Wait a bit for the commercial version of vbHome (Lite). :)
A website for the script should be going up any day now.

vbHome (Lite) will still be available to users, with limited support, IIRC.

so has there been any word on beta 5 for vb3?I reckon they're already running it here. When I hover over an administrator on "Who's Online" here it says 'Forum Administrator'. This does not happen on Beta 4.
The Who's Online Legend is missing some Beta 4 features right now though.

Maybe. If they're using it though it'll probably wind up in the next version either way so as far as I'm concerned I reckon it's beta 5 features I'm seeing.
Could be wrong.

I cannot get the features list thread found here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62743 to open. I get the following error :
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 15 seconds exceeded in /www/beta.jelsoft.com/htdocs/forum/includes/functions.php on line 2769
Is there anywhere else that I can view a full (or close to full) features list of 3.0. I am at a point where i need to add some functions to my forum that are available via hacks, but i do not wnat to do the extra work if those functions will be standard on 3.0
thank you in advance for your time and help

I was using the "hybrid" method of viewing the board. I have just switched to using " linear- oldest first" and now everything works fine. Is this a potential "troubleshooting bug" ?

I have a question:
Vb3 has function "Default Language" - will vB3 have Russian Language support?
Steve Machol
Sun 13th Jul '03, 12:13am
The Language Pack system will allow you to create a Russian Language pack. I expect that some people will create a Russian pack soon after vB3 is final.
AZone
Sun 13th Jul '03, 12:37am
Thank you for answer - I can create a Russian Pack by myself...
Which files will I have to edit - only vbulletin-language.xml?

You will use the Languages & Phrases managers in the Admin CP to do this.

So could the whole message board be trasnlated to another language if a foreign user came on? I imagine an infinite number of phrases and words could be added.
Steve Machol
Sun 13th Jul '03, 2:05am
The forum text will be translated, but not the messages obviously. (Just want to make that clear.)
auto
Sun 13th Jul '03, 2:17am
But don't you think it would be great if some did that? Have a dictionary for common phrases and words so that a language in the messages could be translated enough to where a foreigner could understand them.
Steve Machol
Sun 13th Jul '03, 2:22am
Sure that would be great, but that task is beyond the scope of vB3.

Sun 13th Jul '03, 2:25am
of course, that would be an enormous project on its own.

Just wanted to chime in here with the accolades for the Jelsoft team on a great product. I'd consier myself a NEWBIE as I've never used a piece of BB software of any kind prior to now and once I got my server properly configured the new install of vB3 b4 went off without a hitch.
I'm about to open the front door, once I finish prepping the forums and going over some last minute settings, kinda double checking them. So thank you to the Jelsoft team again for giving us such a wonderful product. Thanks.

They cannot define a deadline, if Bugs are founded they have to resolve it and after that, they can release a beta or a RC...

My mama always told me as a child that when I see it coming up the driveway is when it will be here. That bit of wisdom has served me well for the past half century+.
I for one am a patient individual and will consider the next release vB3 an enjoyable and improved surprise when it does finally gets here.
Patience. Now what else can be said about that virtious perly bit of wisdom!?

While being a software developer... I can empathies with the need to not release any timelines until you are positive you can achieve them... However I am awaiting a date on your release so I can start a rather large and complex project.
It would be pretty helpful to have an approximation of a release date (at least the target month) so that I can better plan my project.
Any insight?
before anyone responds 'Before this time next year'... you can rest assured that I wouldn’t consider that an insightful answer.

I am fairly new here myself, and so I hope my post is not out of line but a general (within the month seems prudent) timetable would be very useful. I understand the hesitation to set a date since some will expect (demand?) it done on that date come hail or high water, but again for the reasonable amongst us a general, tentative time period would be very useful so we may plan accordingly.

They wont release a date as they have no idea on a release date. Once you see all the bugs are fixed in the bug tracker then you should expect one. I think the only ones that have a clue as to what the tentative date is the 4 main developers and they wont tell. You wont find out a date or a tentative one until the devs know they can make that date so we dont have the vB3 fiasco all over again.

vB2 Online Demo was available 11-20-2000
vB2 Beta 1 - 02-12-2001
...
vB2 Final - 05-21-2001
So we can surmise, that vB3 Final will be released around... hm... October 2003? (may be even December - vB3 much bigger and multifunctional than vB2...)
Anyway - we have to wait...

No offense (well I guess really there is at some point) but you guys need to get off their backs. Everyone has a huge project to do. However the software won't be done untill it is done. I am sure the developers are going to get it done "as soon as possible". However I really don't think there needs to be 20 posts in a row saying wow this is **insert random name here** I am working on this ** insert project never going to be started or completed here** please tell me when vB3 will be done. I personally think the people over at Jelsoft are doing a wonderfull job. They are releasing update pretty darn fast considering their tasks thrown at them. GIVE THEM A LITTLE SPACE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!
