I was wondering the most users you've ever seen online at one time on a vBulletin forum.
If you post a number of users, state the server (shared, dedicated, or multiple dedicated servers).
Most users ever online was 4030 on November 12th, 2002 at 03:53 PM. (Personal computer running off dedicated connection).

And thats running vB2 or 3? Thats probably the record and I seriously doubt it was just a regular personal computer. A single p4 would even crap with 4000 users.

What was your cookie timeout setting when this was recorded?

It's vb 2.2.9. Not mine, so I'm not sure about the cookie timeout. I assume it's the default.

I wouldn't make that assumption. I've seen many forums set the cookie timeout to ridiculously high amounts.

a dedicated server only hosting this one site on a P4 with atleast 2gb of ram and a large swap could handle 4000 users no problem. now maybe if it had a lot of hacks pulling 100 queries per request would be a different story. But a out of the box (so to speak) vB 2.x would not have any issues with that.

Honestly, a single P4 would not carry 4,000 users online at one time replying, posting, viewing, editing, and so forth, it would slow down or "crap out" one; take your pick :). There is a reason for seperating the Web Server from the MySQL server and this is one of the reasons; not only that but to reduce the load and displace it between the 2 servers instead of the single.
If you would like to allow such to be conducted on one server, feel free to try, but I would hate to be a member of your board or a guest when the pages timeout, take 1-10 minutes to load, or back to the first, do not load at all :).

Tribal Wars has had as many as 8000 users on at once. They do it all with two servers a dual P4 for WWW and a XEON for MySQL.

Really? I thought you would need at least 4 boxes for such traffic. That's is the most I've heard of.

I'd imagine you can hold 4000 users on a single P4. Reason being, even with a 15 minute cookie timeout, everyone is not using resources at the same time (it can take you five minutes to reply to or read a post) and it takes only a fraction of a second to generate a page.
