OK folks, care to help a dumbass out here ? :)

mysql and php are both new to me, as is the host (Futurequest) which I am about to move to, so I could use a little advice... :)

Has anyone gotten this forum up and running on their servers yet ? If so, what exactly do I need to order from them ? And is it relatively painless ? Or is there anything I should watch out for ?

Thanks in advance... ;)

Craig,

This is Brian from FQ, I have converted a board and did not have any noticeable problems doing so. As far as upgrading I would suggest you use a cycle around 20 or so, and if you have any posts over 60 or so replies long you may want to delete them as I had problems with it timing out then I had to turn my forum back on “search” for that post and delete it, so I suggest deleting them in advance. Other than that try to do this “upgrade” in the early hours as it is very processor intensive.

As far as php/MySQL knowledge you really need none, all you do is enter in your login info and it does the rest. So read the instructions then when it comes time to converting posts do each forum by itself and do a cycle around 20. Then from there you need to make sure you enter in the forum number and then which forum and should move the posts to on the pull down menu. **I goofed that up at first lol**

Besides that you should be good to go!

Wow! Thanks Brian! Looks like, when I make the switch to Futurequest and vBulletin, i'll be able to start enjoying things again! :) Very encouraging - I will order my new account AND the software later today... :D

Hi Brian,

I am Alwaysmefirst/Olly from FQ too and I am thinking about installing vBulletin. Was your previous board UBB? If so, what do you think of vBulletin compared to UBB?

Thank you!

Olly

UBB files with over 60 posts need to be deleted?? Say it isn't so. Those are obviously the most popular threads. My users would kill me :(

What about threads with multiple pages such as 00125-3.html will those process correctly?

If my webserver can barely update the threads in UBB without timing out, what chance will I have of converting my UBB to vB?

That all depends on what hardware you have backing up your site I would say. I imported almost 4000 memebers and only did around 200 posts as a test and some of them had over 60 replies without problems at all, in fact it did all of that in around 20seconds.

I have a 600MHZ p3 dedicated machine though, so it all is relevant to what you have I am sure.

That was a suggestion, it all depends on your setup. I had some trouble on posts that were upwards of 90 or so replies, so I figured if you do have problems, you might want to delete the posts that are that long.

Another *BETTER* alternative would be for vBulletin to look more into the size of posts for its update. IE if you had posts that were really long have it do them in sections?? John would have to comment on this, but I think it could be done, and would help on converting posts that have a ton of replies..
