I was using my newsgroup software and realized I much prefer to have the good old ">"

>when I
>answer
>a message
>to show
>previous
>text you answer to

than our [ quote] [/ quote]

Why ?
Because I, (and this happens also on my forum) love sometimes to comment each and every sentence of a post.

So right now we must do:

[ quote]
Previous text I want to answer toPrevious text I want to answer toPrevious text I want to answer toPrevious text I want to answer to
[ / quote]

then here goes my comment

[ quote]
Previous text I want to answer toPrevious text I want to answer toPrevious text I want to answer toPrevious text I want to answer to
[ / quote]

then here goes my comment

and so on.
It is a pain to do, and sometime end up in a big mess because user get confused about it and put their own text in the bold quote so we don't know really whats the new text.
I dont like the fact that when you answer a message using the "quote" button, you must deal with a start [ quote] and an end [ /quote]

I much prefer to cut right in > text like

> original text I want to answer to
> original text I want to answer to
> original text I want to answer to
> original text I want to answer to

then goes my comment

> original text I want to answer to
> original text I want to answer to
> original text I want to answer to

Then goes my comment.

I find it much easy, and less confusing for newbies.

Thoughts ?

This is actually a pretty good idea. Perhpas this can be made into a configurable option.

I agree 100% Ib my iguana forums these people arent all experts on the internet and html and half of the time they delete part of the [ quote ] tag in the reply anyway, and everything gets destroyed. Should realy be an option to make it just like e-mail. That way people dont have such a hard time switching from a newsgroup to a forum.

Be original :)

great idea,

in my forum people often just but their comments within the quote tag, so you can't tell easily what they've written,

and also when people quote people who qouted people who also quoted people, it ends up looking very confusing, i don't know if this is fixed in vb 2,

i actually prefer the [quote] to < - personally I think it looks much neater, but I'm all for it being an option

I totally agree with the statement about the [ quote] tag being much cleaner, and easier to read as well!

My host's forums have a modification that let you type Quoted string here instead of typing out [ quote ] every time. You may want to look into adding one of those custom BB codes..

I also prefer the [ quote ] method, but if it can be added as a seperate option then it would be a good idea.
