confused about subscribed threads/email notifications

ok, i am still really confused about these subscribed threads/email notifications.

are subscribed theads just a list of threads you get email notification for?

are you able to be subscribed to a thread but not get email notification for it? (THIS WOULD BE A GOOD THING and is actually what I thought it did, but I think I may be wrong)

enlighten me oh wise ones.

Subscribed threads = email notification threads
