When a user registers, the maxchar is set to 20... Now being as @hotmail.com is already 13 characters, that leaves you to only use something with 7 remaining characters... You can go into your user cp then profile and then add it in after registration and it will let you..
To fix this, Edit the register template, and increase the MAXCHAR from 20 to whatever you want...
