View Full Version : Quite unhappy about access masks for new private forums

By default, VB3 still seems to set access masks to allow any mod to enter a newly created private forum. Access masks should never be automatically set, IMHO.
When a new forum is created, we set the permissions by user group, and expect those permissions to be accurate. We don't always want moderators allowed in every private forum on the board. Moderator permissions should follow the permissions of the usergroup when we create forums.

The usergroup system in vBulletin was very inefficient imo. There is no such thing as a private forum in vB2, and there still isn't in vB3. The closest is a forum with all the custom access permissions set to deny, and some weird and wonderfull things happening when you select "private forum" when creating a new forum.
I'd love to see this changed, as well as splitting the ability to chose your primary group AND to inherriate permissions from secondary usergroups, instead of it being merged into one. I hope this can be addressed when there is time :p

Excellent point! I concur...

Actually, the problem does exist on vB2.
I had a nasty little problem where if I created a new usergroup, it automatically set all of its permissions to accept.
It really sucked, considering I accidentally gave my flagged users (people we were watching) access to my moderator forums.
Whoops :D

yep. I had a hack that fixed it in vb2. Was hoping it wouldn't be an issue in vb3 though.

Not in sense of a true private forum there isn't. In either vB2 or vB3 selecting a forum as private just meant the permissions where set too deny for everyone except administrators and supermoderators. For most people that is ok, but for places with many usergroups and permissions it gets very fustrating when 1000+ permissions get added that you dont want.
Im not saying "vB2 or vB3 is s**t, i'm just saying I would like to see it changed, it has come along so far already with secondary usergroups. :)

Using this hack and a user by user base for access to private forums, you will have private forums ;)

By default, VB3 still seems to set access masks to allow any mod to enter a newly created private forum. This is the desired effect for the code, but I think the problem comes from a misunderstanding of what the code does.
The "private forum" option isn't actually a field in the forum table -- it sets permissions (and access masks) for admins and mods to access that forum automatically (no differently than if you had done it yourself). To create a forum that not everyone can access you don't need to select this option; it was just supposed to speed the process.
However, the option has always been somewhat problematic. And just... kludgy. So, as of beta 4, the "private forum" option when editing/creating a forum is no more. You will need to set permissions on the forum yourself (hopefully the new permission management features will speed this process up too).

Ed,
Thanks for the explanation of that. I think that was the biggest issue with private forums, people not understanding exactly how they were supposed to be used. I know we have been bit in the arse a few times because people thought they should setup 'private' forums as 'Private'. Then wondered why all the mods could get to it.
I am glad to see this go in VB3 beta 4 as I am sure it will prevent a lot of un-wanted results when setting up those type of forums.
