(If your server runs PHP as CGI and requires a shebang
like #!/usr/bin/php then enter it here.)
What's that supposed to mean?

what's that supposed to mean? Some servers have PHP running as a CGI-Module. For those servers, you'll need to add the PHP path to every single PHP file. That option will add the path for you.

My Provider is running PHP as a CGI-Module. If vB 2.3 is running without any problems will I have to chance anything for vB 3 in that regard? If yes - I don't know how to find out the PHP path.

Install seemed to work but when I go to any of the pages, e.g. usercp, main index. I just get a blank page :(
Cary
Fri 13th Jun '03, 3:46pm
Just open up your index.php file and you should see the path to PHP there since you're already running it when PHP is running as a CGI Module

Install seemed to work but when I go to any of the pages, e.g. usercp, main index. I just get a blank page ... anything wrong? Could be because of the licence? I own 2 leased licences, i downloaded with the licence from one site and installed to the other one. Could this be the problem ? Anyway, im downloading now with the other licence, maybe will work.

vB3 has surpassed my expectations...

2.) New style new style new style:D
3.) Lots of folders:(

Finally I was able to download the file. My three browsers on my computer didn't work... They all seemed to download the file, and 5 minutes later, a window asking me if I'd want to save a file... I clicked YES and an empty file was saved.... I was getting angry so I decided to take more severe actions and used wget to download the package :)
wget --http-user=xxxxxxxxxx --http-passwd=xxxxxxxxxxxx --post-data="lnumber=xxxxxxxx&ext=php&getwhat=0" http://www.vbulletin.com/members/dl3.php
And it worked :)

Great job, vBulletin team! Good decision on extending the member's area access, that's what I call good service. I'll give the beta a try sometime next week, and possibly upgrade my public board as well (though I hate loosing all hacks and custom mods). We're up for an exciting time ahead. :)
trust me d00d its well worth loosing all those hacks :D i lost about 35 hacks and own made mods but vb3 has alot better hacks insite :D

It has to do with your smilies. I had the same problem with the '-'. If you remove any smilies which have the '\' then it will work. But on a side note Kier moved my post to the Bugs forum since this is apparently not supposed to be happening

I'm curious about the significance of 31st March 2003. My license expired a mere two days prior to that because I gave up faith in the currently sold product (VB2) being updated and VB3 seeing light of day this year (not to mention the insanely short expirey notice which doesn't fit into my accounting window).

or is there a way I can clear out the old attachments?
I had this problem as well. It seems it was a single zip attachment that was causing the problem, and the only solution I could find was to look at the line number which was failing when I tired to import my mysql dump and then open the backkup.sql file manually in edit plus, go to the trouble line, and delete it. Then it imported fine.

will there be a button SDK? if so when could we expect that?
I realy like the Group permissions, it got almost all the features I would like. It would be nice if it was possible to grant users of a specific group permission to post larger attachments than the rest of the users.
The converted styles ait of much use IMO, would be better just to reset it all, although mine wasn't that complicated, but the mix of the different styles was quite annoying

Is it an owned or leased licence?
To upgrade download 2.3.0 and then upload all of the 2.3.0 to your server overwriting the existing ones using ASCII.
Then run all upgradexx.php scripts upto and including upgrade23.php
Don't forget to back up the database first then close the board.

I'll echo that. I have watched folks BEG for release and now there is a beta. I've been playing with it on my Mac as localhost going through all the moves. I'm having a problem in indexing posts (the main upgrade went flawlessly) which is significant to me, but it's beta so I'm not complaining. AViO 07, you got what you wanted. Play with it on a testbed (I'm using my Mac Powerbook) and get used to it. Two weeks to a month from now it will probably be ready for your real forums.
For me - it's on my testbed until I can do everything smoothly here. Until then, I am SO impressed with the improvements and additions that I'm almost in shock. A lot more complicated, but one has so much more control. It's like going from a Cessna 150 to a Lear (well, maybe a Beech King).
I'm sucking eggs troubleshooting on my Mac because I see all the new features. I can't wait for my forums users to experience changes to their end. But it will be a while.
Until then: Take a Valium, smoke a joint, have a drink, pet your cat - do something to cool out. This is the foreplay which isn't always perfect. The climax will be out soon.
As a last thought, make sure you backtrack through any and all hacks you have installed, including database alterations.

As for Jelsoft "providing a product" to you, I'd have to say they have done a pretty great job so far. I have no complaints at all with this product. I just got vB3 beta running on one of my sites... verrry nice. I'm especially pleased with the built-in 'karma' and rank image features. They were two things I wanted to add to my live boards, but never got around to it ;)
The password-protected forum is also a good idea, though it's not as maintenance-free as the current system I use, where access to threads is granted upon 30 posts. I'm going to check if it's possible to automatically send PMs to people when they reach this amount of posts so that they could get the password that way (hell, I've found plenty of nice surprises so far).
I'm getting frequent DB errors; but I noticed a thread about this which I'll check out before blaming my webhost. It runs well enough on my localhost, bar the spyware thingy in the AdminCP insisting on an internet connection >_< Also, the WYSIWYG posting interface looks different...? The one running here is infinitely sexier.
All in all, great work Lads (and Ladies).

Well, I swore I wouldn't go to 3.0 because it looked a lot more complicated for my mostly computer-illiterate end users, even though it was easier on the mods and admins.
But after playing with the beta for a couple of days, I just wanted to say Bravo to the entire team. Y'all have outdone yourselves. And extending my license for 3 months is just icing on the cake.
Worth every penny. Now, get to bug-squashing, and I'll see you back here at "gold". :)
Drumsy, Tachy Goes to Coventry places a user on everyone's ignore list, so no one sees their posts, but they don't know it.

vb3 has toooooo many damn bugs, i was happy its released but now i am not, lol, biggest bug is you get logged out all the time.
Its Beta! don't install it on anything mission critical as its still a development release. Oh yes and I can't run the stats rebuild because it logs me out before it can process all the stats for some reason.

For those people who have slapped vb3 on their site, what responses have you received from your users? I received all kinds of responses to I hate it, its far too confusing too... "I didn't like it at first but now I love it, but it took me ages to figure out how to use the quick response". One great one was "How am I supposed to cope, i'm just a skirt afterall"
Well I suppose they will get used to it aventually.

It's nice to have the beta version out!
That there will be significant template changes between the beta version and the release candidate brings up a question: during what time period will developers incorporate user comments about templates? If there are going to be major changes to the templates between the beta and release candidate, then it does not seem worthwhile for users to make detailed comments about the templates, since the comments may be meaningless if the templates are going to significantly change. But if the templates are only stable at the release candidate, and (presumably) you don't want to make many changes between the release candidate and the gold version, then user comments about the templates aren't going to be incorporated between the release candidate and the gold version, either.
Also, will styles follow the same path that tempates will, i.e., vBulletin users should expect significant style changes between the beta version and the release candidate version?

A few questions...
1) Do you think this version is stable enough to install on very big forums?
One of the vB 3.0 features I look most forward to is removing attachments from the database and put them to a directory instead. My forum's attachment table is nearly 2 gigs last time I check. :(
2) About how long do you think upgrade would take for a forum with 30,000 members and 1 million posts?
Thanks. :)

Well I suppose they will get used to it aventually. I asked my Staff to register so that they can get used to the transition, and they all seem to be getting into it.
What puzzles me slightly is that a few of my regular members have registered too, and the general feeling is that "this is r0xx0r". There isn't anything drastically different about the layout; it's very much vBulletin, albeit with some extras (I wonder how long it will take other boards to ape it :p ). The most significant changes seem to be in the AdminCP.
My members are used to my boards changing shape like a sand dune anyway, so I'll build the new style for the gold release offline and scare the bejeezus out of 'em :D

Many big forums have upgraded to this vB3 beta so I could only imagine it is. But with a beta, there is always the risks. To be safer, a RC would be alot more stable and less risky to install on such a large forum. But so far, vB3 seems to be in working order on big forums, which only makes me think it is...

Actually the styles are not carried over to vb3.0, vb3's template system is different, it has more templates and different ones also, so you cannot use the vb2.x templates on vb3, unless you recode it and then use it.

The colours and other basic settings are imported automatically but anything more complicated like header and footer modifications and other template changes aren't translated. It works very well for people who have only experimented with minor customisation and gives everyone else a useful starting point for rebuilding their layouts. Anything not converted is stored separately for reference purposes so you know exactly where you're up to. I thought that was carried off very well by Jelsoft.

I'm referring to the colors, etc, not necessarily the templates.

From what I've been reading the templates still have some things hardcoded in them and it's going to be a couple releases before they're where they need to be. Is this true?
I'm worried about spending countless hours migrating my old template into the new system and it getting drastically changed again so I'll have to redo it. Is this something I should be worried about or are there going to be minor fixes that can be updated?
Thanks. :)

Hi All
Thanx Development Team :)
I tried both senarios:
1) Install fresh copy on my localhost as well as on my site.
2) Tried to upgrade a copy of my forum on my localhost.
Installation worked for both, with no problems
The only problem (which is making me crazy) is that I couldn't login to the board or the admincp
I don't know why, It worked well on my localhost, although it sometimes do the same (not logging in)
It tells that I am IN but when it came back to the main page, I am not IN :(
any solution?!!
I already wrote a different cookies path while installing, so there should not be a conflict right?!!
anybody faced the same thing?!!

The entire installation process should take no more than five minutes.
Some feedback: I think five minutes is way too optimistic. You might want to change this documentation. I have spent 15 minutes and I'm still not done. This is not a complaint that it takes too long, just a note that it's a lot longer than 5 minutes. It takes time to get into the vbulletin members area, download the new version, install it on the local hard drive, understand where to go to change config.php, understand the fields in there (some of which are new), create a new database on the server, upload the upload directory onto the server, run the install script, and rename directories, and that's not even accounting for the inevitable snafus that will arise. For example when I moved the files from my hard drive onto the server, I noticed that the server's time zone is two hours behind mine, so I decided to wait two hours before running the install script, so as to avoid possibly confusing the install script with dates that are in the future. I'd say replacing "five minutes" with "half an hour" would be much more realistic. Some people will do it in less than half an hour, but it is totally reasonable that many people will take half an hour (or more), so saying that it "should" take less than five minutes is just not realistic in my opinion.

tell meWell, your luck is a littler better than mine. I tried both scenarios.
For the first scenario, the installation process put me in an infinite loop: everytime I press the "Next Step (3/13)" button it takes me back to step 1. :( (EDIT: never mind. I upgraded my computer's php version and now it works. :))
For the second scenario, I managed to upgrade it successfully but couldn't log in... same problem as you!

Help!
I've extracted the files, and the rightmost 6 bits of the permissions are all 0 (for example the directories are 700). This causes problems when I try to access the files at the web site. So right now I dont' have vBulletin 3.0 running. I really don't want to try and guess what the permission of each file in the vBulletin distribution should be.
The machine that I downloaded to (not the server) is running Cygwin (under Windows XP). The file that I downloaded from the members area of the vBulletin site was a Zip file. There didn't seem to be any way to get anything other than a Zip file. Does the members area of the vBulletin site give different files depending on what kind of OS it thinks the download is going to? I wonder if (a) the permissions were tested in a Cygwin or Windows environment, and (b) if I had a way to download a tar file instead of a ZIP file, if things would work fine.

Sorta. Not entirely, at least with my style. But it has been pointed out that the template system and such has changed and that it will *significantly* change between now and the final release. In my changeover there were a number of instances where I have had to 'tailor' things in the admincp. For example, several color conflicts existed (such as the post number link) that I had to change because it was like blue background/blue link text so you couldn't read the text.
I'm still on my testbed, so much is yet to be done. Bottom line is everything is not 1 to 1 translated.

Quick reply add-on sucks so far.
It's ment to type and hit send (or alt-s). Now ya got to hit some icon image between edit and reply.
guess they will make a hack to undo the goof or rename it to "almost quick reply".
Ill have to investagate some more. So far 2.3.0 is the better of the 2 builds.

As it has been said many times before, you can disable the click before the quick reply, but it'll basicly defeat the purpose of threaded and hybrid mode...
From The Admin CP:
Require Click for Quick Reply
If you set this option to 'no', users will not have to click the Quick Reply icon in order to type a message in the quick reply box.
However, this will be at the expense of the usefulness of the Threaded and Hybrid view modes, as the system will not know to which post a user is replying, so the threaded view will become non-sensical.
Set this option to 'no' at your own discretion.

Really nice upgrade guys. The script was awesome to say the least. I found beta 3 very stable, most bugs were in the adminCP and many now have posted fixes available. One question? I am on a shared server and I found version 3 to be a tad slower that 2.0.3, I assume this is mainly because of the vb2 templates being used, will the new templates speed page loads a bit more??
