If you buy a box from Rackspace or someone other company and it comes with nothing on it. How would they let you run .exe files on your server? For like if you wanted to install a firewall or Apache.

I don't think they offer windows as a server operating system, but I'm not sure. If that's the case then .exe files aren't supported in unix operating systems anyway. Otherwise if you have root access you can usually download everything you want by just connecting to websites with lynx (text based web browser), ftp, etc, then installing them.

You can download everything you need using some basic commands and then you will compile the programs (kinda like installing) and pretty soon you will have your box with everything on it. Rackshack gives you places to go to download, in their welcome email, I think.

If you are going to use it for IRCD or Shells, most of the stuff you need is in the OS, If you are going this route, I suggest FreeBSD. If you are going to host on it you are going to need a control panel. Either cPanel, Plesk or a few others. cPanel charges a flat monthly fee for a lisc and the latter of the two offer a 100 domain price for around the same as cPanels unlimited or a higher cost one for unlimited. Installing any of these will also install all the goodies for you like Apache, MySQL. PHP, Image Magick, mail... you get the idea. Anything you still need you just wget the file, untar it and install. Basic UNIX is not that hard once you get the hang of it. Feel free to ask more questions if need be...

IRCD note:
Check before you run a IRCD on your dedicated, Rackshack don't allow linked ones, and RackForce ban them completely, resulting in your server being unplugged.
Rackforce DO supply 2003 .net btw, but I would also advise a *nix based system or *bsd.
Food for though ;)
